MAME WIP has been updated with some news! here is the post

01/01/2000 - EmUDX updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuDX Website has been updated with some new stuff

"The Private beta releases seem to be going well, although we still have some major problems, most of which are being fixed daily. This means not only are we closer to another public release, but possibly a public beta to find out how the .dx files shape up.

Mappy although not yet playable goes through its start up tests, then freezes. Not a good sign, but then again not a bad sign either.

I've started to make progress on this popular "Skins" Idea where people can make up their own graphics and music, and use them in EmuDX, so you could have basically anything you like as the Pacman, ghosts, the frog in Frogger, the Galaxian ship. You could even scan a photo of yourself and play Donkey Kong with yourself as the hero! Sound like a good idea?

Good news for owners of older pc's, Pacman and Ms Pacman have had an enormous speed increase, which should go up even more with the screen resolution change. It is potentially (and seems) a lot faster than the most recent public EmuDX beta, but hasn't been tested to prove this."

MatriDX from EmuForce has put up a preview song for EmuDX. Please get it from EmuForce, here is the post
"...I have something that maybe you want to HEAR, it's a little MP3 from an EmuDX game! I'm not going to tell which game is it, you will have to wait the public release to know that, but now you are going to have an idea of how EmuDX sounds :) (this is just a sound taste, it's like a screenshot of the game, not the emu beta, so I'm not leaking anything, I encoded the file to MP3, so the original source is safe, this is my work and it is a (C) song)"

Please visit EmuDX today! :)

01/01/2000 - GalEmu site updates with new GalEmu and more! [Posted by DarkMazda]

GalEmu site has been updated with some new stuffs! such at

  • Y2K has arrived, and surprise, surprise, nothing much happened... The good news is that both of my compilers (DJGPP 2.01/GCC 2.7.2 and Visual C++ 5.0) compiled the correct date in the source. Run it yourself and see!
  • This is hopefully the first emulator release of the new millennium. Here it is. Not a beta? Not strictly speaking, it basically save a bit of screen space on the title...
  • New game added is Swarm. It's basically another Galaxian clone - somewhere between Galaxian and Moon Alien 2.
Please download GalEmu at Single Arcade Emu Section and visit Galemu today! Thanks goes to JoseQ from EmuViews for the news :)

01/02/2000 - Mac1964 version 0.4.0 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Mac1964(N64 Emu) version 0.4.0 is released! This is a release that has like 9812759 new things :) Anyways, here is what is new

Emulation Improvements:

  • Rewrote the virtual memory code: it's nutty! It can do things like map cartridge memory space to a file on disk. Plus, it's faster and offers memory protection against emulated software reading/writing mac memory.
  • Rewrote a large portion of the r4300 core: It's much more clever! It can patch around delay loops, remove unnecessary delay slots and no longer needs a program counter. Plus fixed some bugs and made more opcodes cacheable.
  • Rewrote DMA transfers to add error checking and speed.
  • Added some basic sound support: many demos now play sound.
  • Tons of improvements to the 3D graphics code: faster, smarter and more accurate.
Interface Improvements:
  • Rewrote the windowing code to improve 2D performance problems and added some options like depth switching,16-bit fullscreen and frame-rate smoothing.
  • Implemented auto-decompression for gzipped files: you can now use something like Easy-GZ to compress your cartridge files to save disk space.
  • File previewer is smarter and faster: it can now peek inside gzipped files.
  • Cartridge specific settings and states are now saved to an external database.
  • Added support for basic drag and drop file opening: drag and drop more then one file for "cartridge roulette."
  • Rewrote the memory management code: Cache memory is now allocated dynamically from the system heap. Important: DO NOT try to change the default memory partition for the mac1964 application.
  • Carbon-ized the application in preparation for Mac OS X. The carbon version also works under Mac OS 9 today.
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed several r4300 opcodes that were misbehaving.
  • Fixed a bug that caused cache blocks to be allocated at 4 times the size they needed to be.
  • Fixed several interface bugs: most notable were the glitches in the cartridge previewer.
Please download it from the N64 Emu Section Thanks goes to bwb from EmuHQ for the news!

01/02/2000 - GeoMAME version .36b11 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

GeoMAME(Unofficial MacMAME that focuses on NeoGeo) version .36b11 is released! Here is what is new from the site

"GeoMAME 0.36b11b. Why b11 and not b13? Simple. In my opinion the video display system in beta 11 is superior to the one currently being worked on MacMAME beta 12 and 13. 3D support is still in tact, and its a wee bit faster. The next major build of GeoMAME will be based on 0.36 final and will use the new video system as 3D support becomes available.

So whats new in beta 11b? This version now supports the recent MVS redump of Super Spy (the old version is now sspymgd) as well as adding several tweaks to the User Interface dealing with autofire and save state support."

Please download this new version of GeoMAME from the MAME Emu Section

01/03/2000 - Speccyal version .70 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Speccyal (Spectrum Emu) version .70 is released! Here is what is new

  • - Added an option to switch between "border emulation" and "no border mode".
  • - Removed F7 (fps off) and F2 (Sound OFF) and made an option out of the two (this means these options act now like a switch, this is a little bit clever and I have now saved some functions keys for future options).
  • - Added an option in file menu to load and debug a snapshot
  • - A snapshot filename can be passed as an argument to the program. This can be of use if you want to associate .z80 and .sna file types to my emulator and automatically launch games. This works but requires the 48.rom file to be copied in the snapshots directory.
  • - Four bytes opcodes are now correctly displayed in the debugger (more exactly, the fourth byte is displayed)
  • - All options are now saved in the inifile (I mean *ALL*, not like before just joystick and path to snaps dir :) )
  • - Added support for .SCR files (loading and saving)
Please download it from the Spectrum Emu Section. Thanks goes to e30 for the news

01/03/2000 - Calypso version 011 Beta is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Calypso(SMS Emu) version Beta 011 is released! Here is what is new

  • First of all, and as people suggestion, the emulator includes support to read ZIP archives, all was extracted from ZLIB library.
  • In order to save some space, the debugger now uses Raze's engine, that's why Marat's one is not included in the .EXE. However, I am still using Marat's disassembler.
  • Mamelang tool included. With this tool you will be able to translate the emulator to any language without programming knowledge (thanks to Vicente Aguilar).
  • (-res)g parameter added. It was a suggestion.
  • Richard Mitton's engine added but I am afraid it doesn't emulate the sound correctly in newer soundcards because it is based in Adlib. It has the same problems as my old Adlib engine, but this is better because it emulates the noise.
  • Some changes of the GUI. Priority of the windows bug was fixed. Some changes in the colour of the interface.
  • (-snd) option. Thanks to Richard Mitton.
  • (-scanlines) parameter added. At the moment only in the version without GUI.
  • Osciloscope. (Must be improved).
  • Added a MegaDrive-Genesis debugger. You can enter with -d, the same as the other. All the keys are compatible. At this moment its not perfect.
Please download it from the SMS/GG Emu Section Thanks goes to SmS00thy for the news.

01/07/2000 - Impact and PSEmu Plugins don't mix :P [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like iVilDeD posted something REALLY interesting

"The problem with people like this who claim they *know* is that their speculations turn to rumors which turn to "fact".

Only the plugin structure (which is open source) and keyboard controller is borrowed from psemu (with the former psemu teams blessing of course). We figured that it was a great way to get going with the project to use existing psemu plugins and make our own later, but since we have made some modifications to the original plugin design (and still are), psemu's plugins will probaly not work for long.

On a side note: PSEmu's plugins aren't working 100% with Impact like people claim. The reason why PSEmu plugins are a bit faster is that they are made for for less vram than impacts own renderers. You get a few extra fps by sacrificing textures.

We're not saying we owe nothing to the psemu team, cause we do since they let us use their plugin "standard". But giving Impacts FULL credits to the psemu team is not only inaccurate, it's also unfair to the hard working Impact coders."

01/07/2000 - Snes9x Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SNES9X site has been updated! Here is what they post

"DirectX and OpenGL support continue to cause me problems on the Windows port - Nuts and Bolts reported that my desktop machine had a RAM fault so I put coding on hold until I had enough money to buy a replacement SIMM module - only to be told the new module had a RAM fault, in the same location! Hmm...

Turns out that Nuts and Bolts reports a RAM fault on all the machines I've run it on, only a a couple of hundres dollars wasted buying a new RAM module I didn't need. It turned out that real fault was a crappy, old TNT graphics driver; until recently, all newer TNT drivers from Creative would cause Windows to hang at boot up, until the lastest one, which works fine and fixes some of the problems I was having with OpenGL.

I'm currently in the middle of adding cheat code and cheat search dialogs to the Windows port, once that done, I'll make a release. The cheat code entry dialog is done, the cheat search dialog is in progress. After that, its OpenGL support.

Other things coming up, in no particular order, are 3d card screen rendering, internet netplay support for the Windows port, investigate sound emulation problems, convert more the code to assembler and other random things that I can't think of at the moment."

01/08/2000 - Cherryroms REOPENS! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Cherryrom REOPENS!! Here is the post!

"Well it's time for a much needed update.
Yes that's right were back (well partially) The only section that's not up in this update is prolly the only section people come here to see.

Due to much pressure from various partys (thanks to all those who email'd me, those were many). And the fact that I couldn't bare to see my creation in such a sorry state of affairs (though it has been for such a long time).

    We are back..

Sorry to quash the unfounded rumours but NO we have not been shut down by Nintendo nor have the roms collections gone down the drain, Cherryroms was actually killed by what can only be described as RLT (real life troubles) with the load at work getting too emence and side web projects taking up a lot of time. It has taken a lot of time to redo cherryroms and it seems the time has finally arrived to get it back on track.

The ROMS sections should be up as soon as we can get this DataBase sorted (it's almost finished)..

To make up for that theres a pretty spiffing ROTF containing some of my favourite games of all time.

So have a browse through some of the new pages, I hope you like the new virginal look :).

    ...Recoil "

"Perhaps it's time for an update... Yes, I'm bad at updates, sorry :) Currently, I'm working on a new dynarec core for the Mac1964 project while Gerrit takes a much needed (& well deserved!) break for a month or so. Consequently, work on the Windows version will be in a holding pattern for a while. But here's the game plan: we've discussed creating a glut version of his hle engine in the future to (hopefully) make the port to windows much easier. :) For those interested, I released 0.3.3 binary (Windows)..and the speed is..mmm respectable. I have also released the source code in its entirety, which includes the previously unreleased dynarec engine.

    cya!

01/09/2000 - EmuDX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuDX Site has been updated with some news! Here it is

"First Moon Cresta shot now available on the screenshots page. Mooncresta is one of the games which are "ready to go" once the new graphics are available.

"Zig Zag", a Dig-Dug bootleg now runs reasonably well in EmuDX, although it does not have any updated graphics or music yet.

Good news for those of you awaiting the next public release. Most of the nasty crashes have been hunted and killed.

Fixed pacman & ms pacman to work nicely in 800x600

The Barrels in Donkey kong now "roll" (rotated as they fall down the screen full 360). This is a vast improvement over the 2 step animation it previously had.

Forced the display into the centre of the visible screen. This means you can play Frogger in 800x600 (with the top and bottom of the screen chopped off)

Added the music to Donkey Kong and fixed the Music in Frogger

First look at implementing software 3D rendering. The idea of playing Frogger from a first person perspective seems very attractive.

Added the new Galaxian graphics for bullets (Aliens & Ship)

If there are no problems with the latest private beta, the next one will be publically available. Confirmation either way will be on this page within the next 7 days. This is to give enough time to download the necessary .dx files before the beta is released"

01/10/2000 - Pretendo WIP Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo WIP has been updated!

"Well, we're still working on it, and it's still "coming along" as usual. We've made various internal changes to some code... things are cleaner, and we've eliminated about 95% of those nasty GPF erros. We've organized the menus better, so instead of having about 37, there's like 4. Additionally, we've changed the size of the window so that the area where the graphics are being rendered is 256x240 pixels, which just happens to be the NES's resolution. PrOxY has changed the video and input plugins format a little bit. The current documentation should cover it, be we were nice enough to scratch of some header files for everyone to download.

In an attempt to speed up the rendering, we've implemented a pattern cache. It's not very fast yet. Additionally, we've added some more mapper support... you can wait for the next WIP version to find out which ones :). There is now joystick support, yay! Finally, we've added PAL/NTSC video modes, and we've corrected some Sprite0 issues."

Please visit Pretendo for those :)

RockNES Updates!

  • I forgot to say about EAGLE support and the oldblitter, they´re back. Right now, they can´t be selected from the GUI, but by command line. For EAGLE, you type "-eagle" option, and "-oldblit" to enable default Allegro´s bitmap blitter, slower, but compatible with any video mode (use it if you noticed speed down).
  • The RockNES Save State information has been updated to 1.2.

01/10/2000 - MAME version .36b14 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAME Version .36b14 is released! here is what is new

    New games supported:
    --------------------

    Hopping Mappy [Nicola Salmoria]
    Sky Kid Deluxe [Nicola Salmoria]
    Plump Pop [Nicola Salmoria]
S.P.Y. (not playable due to protection) [Nicola Salmoria]
    Baluba-louk no Densetsu [Zsolt Vasvari]
Super World Stadium '93 Gekitouban [Keith Wilkins]
    Streaking [Zsolt Vasvari]
    Black Hole [Zsolt Vasvari]
    Tank Force [Vernon C. Brooks]
    Soldam [Luca Elia]

    New clones supported:
    ---------------------

    Pinbo (Jaleco)
    Cosmo Gang (US)
    Marvel Land (US)
    Galaga 88 (set 2)
    Pole Position (Namco)
    Jungle King (newer)
    Knockout (= Triple Punch)

    These drivers have improved GRAPHICS:
    -------------------------------------

    - Sprite multiplexing support in the Exidy440 games, this fixes Chiller's
    start screen. [Aaron Giles]

    - Fixed the internal orientation of the Cinematronics games, if you use
artwork files for those games you'll have tomanually flip them (or
    redownload).

    Other drivers changes:
    ----------------------

    - Improved Capcom Avengers, the wrong colors are caused by the protection.
    [Phil Stroffolino]

    Changes to the main program:
    ----------------------------

    - Added noise generator to the Namco sound emulation. [Takahiro Nogi]

    Source:
    -------

    - Removed *rom_decode and *opcode_decode from struct GameDriver. Decryption
must now be handled by *driver_init. If opcodes and data are decrypted
separately, remember to allocate a larger chunk of memory in the ROM
declaration, decode the opcodes there, and call memory_set_opcode_base()
to tell the memory system where the opcodes are.
Note that this new system allows bank switching with encrypted ROMs, which
    wasn't possible before. [Nicola Salmoria]

    - Removed *hiscore_load and *hiscore_save from the GameDriver structure. To
manage nvram/eeprom/cmos/etc the new *nvram_handler in struct MachineDriver
must be used. High score save is temporarily disabled. It will be added
again in a future release using an external .dat file. [Nicola Salmoria]

    - The struct GameDriver reorganization is finally complete. Drivers should now
use the GAME() and GAMEX() macros and not directly the GameDriver structure.
IMPORTANT FOR PORTERS: Note that the clone_of field now is not necessarily
0 even if the game is not a clone. If clone_of is not 0, to know if the game
    is a clone you have to check (clone_of->flags & NOT_A_DRIVER) is 0.

    - Added OSD_FILETYPE_NVRAM.

    - MachineDriver->frames_per_second is now a float.

Please Download it from the MAME Emu Section

01/10/2000 - Prentendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo site has been updated with some news and a NEW LAYOUT!!

"Okay. I've re-done the site once again, to state the obvious. I hope everybody likes it. If you recall a while back I mentioned that the web design company I worked for was going to do the site. Unfortunatley, things were not working out, and I am no longer working there. Oh well. If everyone likes the site as is, then there won't be a need to re-do it again. Please let me know by clicking here. Now, you probably want to know what's going on with Pretendo. Well, we're still working on it, and it's still "coming along" as usual. We've made various internal changes to some code... things are cleaner, and we've eliminated about 95% of those nasty GPF errors. We've organized the menus better, so instead of having about 37, there's like 4. Additionally, we've changed the size of the window so that the area where the graphics are being rendered is 256x240 pixels, which just happens to be the NES's resolution. PrOxY has changed the video and input plugins format a little bit. The current documentation should cover it. We were nice enough to scratch of some header files for everyone to download. Get them by clicking here. In an attempt to speed up the rendering, we've implemented a pattern cache. It's not very fast yet. Additionally, we've added some more mapper support... you can wait for the next WIP version to find out which ones :). There is now joystick support, yay! Finally, we've added PAL/NTSC video modes, and we've corrected some Sprite0 issues.

PrOxY has just informed me that he will be very busy with school projects in the next few weeks, so he will not have a lot of time to work on Pretendo until he's done with them. Don't worry, We're not stopping development on Pretendo completely... it will just be slower until PrOxY is back."

Please visit Pretendo today! Thanks goes to Roni from EmuCamp for the news. :)

01/10/2000 - GetRight 4.1.2 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like GetRight 4.1.2 is released! We all love GetRight right? :) Anyways, here is what is new

  • Lockup for some people when adding a new download.
  • Add a checkbox under the Options button on the download window so you can set each file to be run/opened when done.
  • Added to the Export item so it can also export in HTML format...a simple little web page that has links and info about the files. Kinda cool :)
  • Added more status stuff for showing that it is searching for alternates.
  • GetRight®. GetRight is now officially a registered trademark of Headlight Software! Added the little ® symbol on the splash and web page.
  • FTP Search could trigger thinking the file is a web page. (The file was fine, just giving the message when it should not.)
  • If pause when a tray icon, show right image.
  • File size not always displayed right if FTP downloading (shows right some places, but not others.)
  • Fix possible problem with retrying when it shouldn't for some FTP errors.
  • If GRX file doesn't have a FILE item for a URL, use defaults to get a filename.
  • If used "Login" button with anonymous login, don't pass on to downloads.
  • In local filenames, change HTML escape & to & (There are many others, but that's the one I've heard about people encountering...and other common ones are illegal in filenames anyway: < and >)
  • And fix to show URLs and filenames on the download window right if they contain &.
  • If error on FTP PORT command, make sure retries with PASV command.
  • If an empty file is being downloaded (0 bytes), handle better.
  • Added %J% and %-J% special values for Daily Downloads...number of days into the year.
  • Fix some "rollback" things
  • Fix some windows coming to the front ("summary" help things you see once.)
Please download it from Getright.com. Thanks goes to Skates from ES for the news :)

NEW Game Added Raine Updates!!

"We had many requests from people to include Truxton a.k.a Tatsujin in Raine, it made sense because it's a shooter, made by Toaplan and released by Taito...so we will include it in the next release.

Some of you asked us why Rambo 3 was different from the game they remembered playing in the arcades. The answer is simple, it seems Taito made a later release of the game to the arcades, with different cutscenes and levels. So we added this Rambo 3 Release 2 to the next version."

01/13/2000 - Back in Time updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Back in Time site has been updated with a new episode!! Here is the post

"This is certainly the longest (and hopefully the best) episode to date, as I have a TON of great guests crammed into one show. The episode was recorded at the Coronation Day Championship video game tournament on January 8th & 9th. The event was sponsored by Twin Galaxies -- The Official Video Game & Pinball World Records scoreboard. The event was held at Funspot in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. Funspot has what is probably the largest collection of MINT condition classic coin-op video games. The arcade at Funspot has over 500 coin-op games. Roughly 125-150 of them are classic games like Donkey Kong, Tron, etc.

The Twin Galaxies' Coronation Day Tournament, traditionally an "invitation-only" Player-of-the-Year contest, was open to the public this year. The contest featured competition between the nation's best players on five different coin-op games and five different console games. Also, several classic coin-op world records were broken at this tournament, including the world record for Super Pac-Man.

Walter Day from Twin Galaxies talks a bit about the Twin Galaxies web site and world record book. The rest of the guests are the "who's who" of video game players. They include Billy Mitchell, the first person to get a perfect score in Pac-Man. Also joining me is Ben Gold, the winner of the North American Video Game Olympics, which was held on the old "That's Incredible" TV series in early 1983."

Please visit Back In Time Thanks goes to Mike Stulir for the E-mail.

EmuDX Website has been updated also! Look at this post

"Some changes have been made to the main program, allowing for lower spec machines to run EmuDX, with some of the effects turned off. Transparencies and lighting effects are now optional, as well as options to draw direct to the screen display rather than a temporary surface. Using this method, pacman runs at 1677fps and above (unthrottled with no frameskip in 800x600 16bit) on the development machine. There are obviously some disadvantages to using these options, such as some image quality loss, but it allows for users of lower specification pc's to use EmuDX."

01/14/2000 - EmuDX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuDX site has been updated! Here is the post

"Everything seems to be changing pretty quickly now. There has been a lot of progress with some of the visual effects.

VegaX sent updated graphics for Frogger and Donkey Kong. You can see some of the new effects on the updated screenshots page, along with some brand new Galaxian screenshots.

Some of the effects include (but are not limited to) glowing fire and updated platform graphics in Donkey Kong, along with improved Frogger text graphics and transparent water effects.

New improved screenshots have been uploaded for Donkey Kong, Frogger and Galaxian. Click the images to show them normal size.

Also on the screenshots page is your very first glimpse of the unfinished EmuDX GUI. This is where it all happens.

Unfortunately, a public beta is not possible just yet, due to the fact that the .dx datafiles are changing daily. As you may already know, some of these files are quite large. Therefore it is not practical to offer these files just yet, making a public beta impossible.

Two more games have had some initial work on them. These are Bomb Jack and a popular space shoot em up. It is not known yet if these will be available in 1.0

Some changes have been made to the main program, allowing for lower spec machines to run EmuDX, with some of the effects turned off. Transparencies and lighting effects are now optional, as well as options to draw direct to the screen display rather than a temporary surface. Using this method, pacman runs at 1677fps and above (unthrottled with no frameskip in 800x600 16bit) on the development machine. There are obviously some disadvantages to using these options, such as some image quality loss, but it allows for users of lower specification pc's to use EmuDX.

Frogger's display routine seems to be cleared up now, removing the graphical glitches that some testers were experiencing.

If you have an idea of a specific function or option that you would like to see included in EmuDX1.0, please contact us."

01/14/2000 - 1964 updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Fortunately, this is an easy fix. The first line in sound.c reads: "#define WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN". Simply remove it :) I tried to get a little fancy... My bad.

    - NooTe has added zlib zip support to 1964, so you will be able to zip your ROM images. This feature is not available in version 0.3.3, but will be available in the next release.

    - I have received my adaptoid in the mail. It's very cool! An adaptoid is an adapter that allows you to simply plug your N64 controller into a USB port on your computer. I highly recommend it. Surprisingly, it worked with Mac1964 0.4.1 as soon as I plugged it into my iMac. For more information, visit WishTech at: http://www.wishtech.com.

    - Last, but not least, today is my mother's birthday.. Happy b'day, mom!"

Otherwise, nothing else major. Oh yeah, I started a BeOS port. "

01/15/2000 - UltraHLE Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

RealityMan has updated the UltraHLE site with a post!

"Judging by the e-mails continually flooding into HLE Towers it seems that there are many of you who are confused as to the status of UltraHLE, so let me clear this up....

The new version of UltraHLE *IS* still being developed. It will be released in the same manner as v1.0.0 (e.g. it'll just appear one day) and it will remove the need for all those little add-on programs and utilities (although very good and inventive) that provide additional functionality. The only thing that is hanging in the balance currently is the GLIDE support. Recently I have upgraded to a Xentor32 TNT2 Ultra graphics card which kinda limits me to OpenGL and DirectX. I may re-support glide in a patched version but unless there is a huge number of requests for glide, it may well disappear gracefully.
