03/01/2000 - Nemu64 & 3dfx [Posted by Lycia]
The Nemu64 site has been updated with hWnd's thoughts on 3dfx. Basically, hWnd doesn't like 3dfx and will not have anything to do with supporting the cards in Nemu64. Nemu64 is specifically optimized for Nvidia video card products, and doesn't support the 3dfx cards. Here's what hWnd had to say:

It is a fairly poorly kept secret that I, hWnd, have a grudge against 3DFX. I won't get into the details, but as a coder, I refuse to write any special code to accomodate a 3DFX product. Because of this decision, secondary boards such as the Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 do not and will not work with Nemu64. Though I did not intend it, it seems that Banshee users are also experiencing problems such that they are either unable to run Nemu at all or are getting frame rates in the single digits. This is regrettable. Even Voodoo3 users are having difficulties, though I have heard there is a driver/settings combination that gives decent, though not ideal, results. Please stop writing me asking for Voodoo support. Nemu's graphics have been optimized for use with recent nVidia boards, such as the TNT, TNT2, and GeForce, mainly since the TNT2 is the board that I own. I don't have access to others. My suggestion if you are interested in N64 emulation is to make your next board a TNT2-Ultra, or GeForce, since Nemu is optimized to these boards, and UltraHLE 1.5 will be using OpenGL, which is highly optimized under nVidia Boards. (See screenshots on UltraHLE page taken with TNT2 board). Once again...I regret that the Voodoo users among you are disappointed, but there will be no graphics code written to accomodate a 3DFX product. I won't go out of my way to make things not work, so if 3DFX decides to stop making developers jump thru hoops, their boards will start working too.

Thank You

Let's hope that he can resolve those differences and work on supporting 3dfx in future versions of Nemu64.

Thanks to EmulationHQ for the news.

03/01/2000 - PSMPlay v0.3 [Posted by Lycia]

A new version of PSMPlay, a utility that lets you see/hear STR/XA/TIM files on your PSX CDs, has been released! Here's a list of what's new:

  • The process of the Y parameter was strange at the time of the YUV change.
  • All XA channels are supported (32ch). But, not perfect.
  • The FF8 data of only the audio can play-back.
  • Copes with the output which LAME was used for.
  • The Analyze process of the STR data was changed. (I thinks that many STR forms are found.)
  • CDXA was added to the object of Analyze.
  • The STR form of "Gran Turismo", "Gran Turismo 2" and
  • "Ace Combat III" can be play-back.
  • All can't be playback, and it isn't understood whether it can cope with it from now on, too, at present.
  • It may work with the environment after DirectX3 because only the function of DirectX3 is being used fundamentally.

UltraHLE website has been updated with a post!

"Over the last 24 hours I have received many e-mails and communications from people asking why I am dropping 3DFX support. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I do not know where this has come from. 3DFX has a stable OpenGL ICD now which actually runs faster on my Voodoo3 than OpenGL on my TNT2 card. I also have excellent developer access at 3DFX so why would I drop it ??? - RealityMan. "

03/03/2000 - 1-UP v0.9.832 [Posted by Lycia]

A new version of 1-UP, a universal frontend, has been released. Here's a list of bugfixes and new features:

Bug fixes in this release:

  • The emulator picture for a "single game" emulator would be only displayed for a split second. This has been fixed.
  • It was possible, under certain circumstances, for 1-UP to become frozen after launching an emulator. This is now fixed.
  • If you had the image toggle set on and selected a game that had no images assigned to it 1-UP could also freeze. This is now fixed.
  • If you attempt to edit a game in the "Multi-Add Results" window you will no longer get an invalid procedure call (this was a bug new to the last version).
  • Configuration file changes are now made when an emulator function is run. This improves the reliability of the MAME functions when you have both arcade and NEOGEO ROMs AND they are in different directories.
  • If a game information resource file is specified, but doesn't exist, 1-UP will now tell you that game information is not available.
  • You can no longer change the emulator associated with a game when editing it. This fixes an obscure "subscript out of range" bug.
  • If you have a game selected, showing it's cabinet image and then select another game that has no images available, 1-UP now correctly displays the "Preview of [game name] is unavailable".
  • You can no longer create a file name to real name resource file for single image emulators (ZNSES, KGen, RockNES, etc.) only CRC files. File name resource files can still be created for emulators such as MAME, Raine, Shark, MESS, etc.
  • The "preview not available" text message was badly aligned when in the large window view in previous versions - it's now fixed.
  • The game information textbox was badly aligned when you started 1-UP in the small window view - it's now fixed.
  • If you cancelled the import emulator wizard after selecting the emulator file AND had no other emulators loaded would get a "subscript out of range" error. This is fixed.
  • Several users have reported that 1-UP doesn't redraw correctly after they exit an emulator. This should be fixed in this release.
  • The mouse pointer is set the "busy" when you click the finish button in the multi-add wizard.
  • It was possible to get a "subscript out of range" if you had the image toggling on, selected a game associated with an emulator that you were about to remove and then removed it.

New features in this release:
  • When you open the games manager window to add a game (or games with the multi-add wizard) the emulator combo box will be given focus. This has been done to make it clearer that you can actually do something with this window.
  • The searching for game resource files (screen shots, flyers, etc.) has been optimised.
  • If 1-UP encounters a corrupt zipfile whilst you are attempting to add a zipped game, it will tell you! I thought that might be handy :)
  • If a game image contains a single quote (') this will be replaced with an underscore (_) as no application likes single quotes in game names. For example, "Yoshi's Island" becom "single-image" emulators are effected. I never understood why ROM sites had files in zips that you couldn't run until you renamed them; anyway 1-UP now takes care of this for you!
  • Singe image game resource files (screen shots, flyers, cabinets, information files, etc.) can now be named by the 32-bit CRC of the game image they relate to. 1-UP will now match on either filename or 32-bit CRC values. This has the same advantages as naming games by the file's CRC; although the filename can change, the CRC doesn't so 1-UP still knows what the game is.
  • NOTE: I'll be uploading my screen shot archives for Genesis (800+ images), SNES (260+ images), PC-Engine (200+ images) and more over the next few months. All of these filenames will be in this format.
  • When creating real name resource files, you can choose to append to the currently loaded resource. For example, if you load the SNES resource, but have a game that is not listed in it, you might want to name it correctly and use the append function to update the resource file.
  • A new wizard has been added - the "Filename to CRC converter wizard". This will rename all your existing screen shots, etc. to the game's ROM/disk image 32-bit CRC value. You can elect to keep the old versions, see a report etc.
  • Focus now goes to the game list after you have quit from an emulator.

You can pick up this fine frontend by downloading the following file:

"PSXEmu is back online ... Exactly one year, after I started my first bleem! site somewhere on free Xoom hosting space (when I find the URL again I might post it here later)

Well, what was the reason for our downtime ? Since it's over now, I don't want the discussion to start again. Let's say we had some internal team troubles, which should be fixed now, so we can continue to bring you the best emulation news out there.

There was something else that changed ... :) Ah, exactly : We changed to this new design, which has been in development for quite some time. A big thanks goes to Thorgal, who had the original idea and to JNS, who created many of those nice logos everywhere on the page. Though I worked on it through the past few days, it isn't finished completly yet ... Some colors don't fit properly, some pages are missing ... I'll add all those things over the next few days.

A big thanks also goes out to DragonYen, EmuManiac and mathew2, who made this return possible.

Check back tomorrow for some nice specials I prepared over the past days, but which I just didn't got finished. I promise, there're some really interresting facts in it."

03/06/2000 - SHu Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SHu site has been updated with some news

"The HuC6280 INF file is almost finished. This INF file is vital to the production of the new RISC2 core. Since this INF file contains all the specs about this cpu, it will make it possible to enhance the cpu, make programming languages for the cpu, debuggers, decompilors, compilors, better emulators, HLE emulators, ect. The next step the SHu Team has to worry about, is to make the INF compilor to auto-generate the new RISC2 core in VB& MASM. Later the compilor can be used with an INF file to make cpu cores for other cpus to help emulators. example: programming the INF file to match the SNES cpu spec, when compiled, it will yield a SNES RISC2 cpu core intirely in MASM. FASTER & SMALL THAN BEFOUR!!!"

03/06/2000 - Nemu64 and VooDoo3 [Posted by DarkMazda]

Remember when hWnd took the support off for VooDoo3 since he doesn't like 3dfx? well Shadyn has E-mailed me with a trick so you COULD get Nemu64 to work with VooDoo 3 cards! Here is the post I got

"What the Nemu team said about setting the resolution and color depth IS necessary, but that alone may not work. If you still have problems running Nemu, make sure you have the latest drivers (1.04 series, use either 1.04.00 or one of the betas) then go into your Display Properties and click the Settings tab, then click Advanced. Go to the 3dfx Tweaks tab and there will be four sections (Desktop, Direct3D, OpenGL/Glide, and Video Overlay), simply uncheck ALL of the options checkboxes for these four sections, Apply the >changes, and start Nemu. It should run very well now. (It crashed my computer upon loading a rom at first. Since I did this it runs more or less perfectly)"
Thanks goes to Shadyn for the E-mail :)

03/09/2000 - YnT Updates [Posted by DarkMazda]

My translation group YnT's website has been updated with some news from Kammendo

"Thanks to Kaiser Dragoon for sending me the font I needed, I implemented the lovercase and so I finally could start debugging the programs that Truplaya started working on. Haven' t heard anything from him for awhile now, still hope he gets back someday. Well, in any case, I fixed a few bugs in the proggies (like I said) and tried an insertion, unfortunately it wasn't successfull, just because there isn't a pointer support implemented yet :/ . I'm going to fix that next weekend, because on this monday the 2nd turn at the University starts, so I won't be able to work on the project until Friday. Hope in the meantime that Strago and Celes get more script translated. I'm really just a few troubles from a patch away :), wow that's amazing :D. Ciao"

03/10/2000 - Snes9x Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Snes9x's Journal has been updated! Here is the post

"Network game-play (both local network and Internet) on the Windows port is progressing; no GUI yet, but several rewrites later and I can now play multi-player games between machines on my mini-network at home. There are some Windows threading issues I still have to look into - basically if Snes9x can't hit 100% frame rate, the main emulation thread seems to steal all available CPU time from network client and/or server threads and emulation speed doesn't remain constant. Also, I need to improve the protocol: slim-line it some more, otherwise just two people playing will saturate a modem connection, and add additional messages; but it's getting there."
Please visit Snes9x. Thanks goes to _94_ for the news.

03/10/2000 - 2 New Genesis Power releases! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Genesis Power has released 2 new roms! Here is the post

" 10 Mar 2000 - Sonic week wraps up with Genesis Release #68: Sonic And Knuckles + Sonic 2 and Genesis Release #69: Sonic And Knuckles + Sonic 3.

Information on combining Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 1, 2 or 3 can be found at Lock-On Technology Hacking Guide by No Carrier. The S&K+Sonic combined carts we are releasing are our dumps combined using the procedures mentioned there. We are making these available here since we realize many folks today are DOS challenged and wouldn't know how to use a hex editor if they had 0x10 fingers and toes. "

03/11/2000 - DragonYen reviews VGS! [Posted by DarkMazda]

My friend DragonYen(from Bleem!) has reviewed the Virtual Game Station for Windows! Here is a clip

"Got my copy of Virtual Game Station for the PC today and I must say that I was impressed. Not as much as the first time I played bleem!, but impressed none-the-less. So I ripped open my FEDEX package like it was Christmas, eager to look at the box and play with my new toy. Most of my review will be based on my preconceived notions of a PSX emu based on bleem! While it may be unfair to VGS to compare it to bleem! VGS has had plenty of time to play with and look at bleem! and further develop any short comings that bleem! may have. As well as they have had much user feedback from the Mac version of VGS."
Please visit PSXEmu to view the review!

03/11/2000 - Pretendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo site has been updated with some progress! Here is the post

"Here's a bunch of good news to read for March. As rumoured earlier, we do in fact have CPU core plugins! Currently, we've got two plugins. The first is Neil Bradley's M6502, (which we've been using in non-plugin form since the first WIP) as well as Shu Kondos S6502. (used in BioNES) Both cores work rather well, and we'll be finalizing and documenting the CPU plugin format hopefully by the next release. Next in line, we now have mapper plugins. The next version of Pretendo will include a set of commonly used mappers that are built in, (not plugins) and other mappers will be available for download someplace on the download site. Also, the plugins are fully compliant with those of NESten... so you write a mapper for Pretendo, it works on NESten, and vice-versa. We implemented a couple more mappers, and finally fixed the problems with MMC3, so Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 finally work nicely, as well as many other MMC3 games. The next release will be a bit faster than the previous due to improvements in the tile-cache, as well as our memory system. We've made some changes to the PPU. (yes, scrolling is FINALLY fixed for good.... if you play Mario 1, you'll be grateful) Otherwise not too much else... hopefully we'll fix up the sound by the next release (should sound normal) and, hopefully, we'll release the next version by the end of this month."
Please visit Pretendo website.

03/15/2000 - New GBC emu in the works by author of FWNES [Posted by Slime]

It appears that fanwen the author of fwnes has plans to release a gbc emu for dos and linux, possibly even win9x. FWNES as you may remember has the highest compatibility of all the nes emus so we can expect FWGBC to give even the reigning gbc emus kings (no$gmb, rew, etc.) a real run for the money. And to top it off it appears that it does not need EMS memory to run gbc and gb games that are more than 512k so this should be an emu to watch for.

03/15/2000 - MAMED/MESSD version .36b16 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

NEW MAMED and MESSD released! Here is what is new

"First, sound is now working on the DC290! BUT! you must upgrade to version 1.0.4 of the camera firmware. I don't know when 1.0.4 will be availible from Kodak but you should be able to find the firmware updater here when it does becomes availible. Dynamic loading for the DC290 is also working with this new version of DC290 firmware.

Second, sound is much better, the new MAME core sound code is much better and faster than the XMAME sound code I was using to mix the multiple channels, you should notice the improvement immeadiately. I also rewrote my Kodak sound code for better performance and quality.

Third, this release is much faster in general, I removed all task delays from the core and implemented some semphore handshaking for much more responsive buttons."
Please download MESSD from our Multi Console Emu and MAMED from our MAME Emu Section.
