03/02/2001 - MESS WIP! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MESS's WIP has been updated with some February updates! :)

  • Tuesday 13th February, 2001 - Lawrence Gold fixed xmame so that the DGA 2.0 mode-switching should finally work (the problem was that two pointers were referring to the same palette but only one of them was being reset when the palette was recreated for the new screen depth.) Lawrence also released xmame/xmess 0.37b11.2. Sean Young made some fixes to the WD2793 emulation for the MSX driver (MSX-DOS and many disk games work now.)
  • Monday 12th February, 2001 - Jurgen Buchmueller fixed a problem in the ANTIC video controller (used in the Atari 400/800) which was introduced with the new memory system: using the data argument to hold more than 8 bits in a write handler doesn't work anymore! Sean Young added mappers for Super Load Runner and the Korean many-in-1 cartridges for the MSX driver.
  • Sunday 11th February, 2001 - Raphael Nabet fixed instruction timing further, edited comments, changed apexc.flags to more descriptive apexc.running, fixed a macro ambiguity, clarified a few comments, and fixed an unsafe sprintf() call, and added APEXC_ML_FULL register type to support the control panel in the APEXC CPU core. Raphael also inserted support for RAM (a.k.a. cylinder) image loading, added a control panel and reordered most items to the APEXC system driver which is now in a workable state and has been promoted to a full driver. As well, Raphael added IO_CYLINDER as a device type to MESS, and added a short descriptive comment for each device type. Kev Thacker started to add "scorpion 256" emulation (it boots, but it doesn't go into the menu like it should, instead it goes into 48k mode.) Kev also updated the NC card image handling code; if an executable card was read, it would generate a bad directory listing (now fixed); and if an executable card is directoried, then no directory listing is shown. Stefano Priore added IO_PUNCHCARD and IO_PUNCHTAPE descriptors to MESS, aligned LEDs with the text under them in the APEXC system driver by changing the font to 6x8 instead of 8x8, and fixed the makefile to allow compilation of CPU cores in the mess/ directory. Juergen Buchmueller made a couple small fixes to the APEXC system driver. For the CoCo 3 driver, Nathan Woods altered the way video RAM is scanned so that John Kowalski's Boink demo now runs (albiet with many glitches.) Nathan also updated MESS32 to properly recognize the new device types (cylinders, punch cards and punch tapes) introduced with the APEXC driver. Lawrence Gold added a forgotten #ifdef that was preventing xmame from building without DGA.

03/02/2001 - Rumor Mill! [Posted by DarkMazda]
JoseQ has released the new Rumor Mill for March!! This issue talks about "Bliss, Smog, Ages, BDM/KGB, and Gens". Please read it here

03/02/2001 - MagicEngine Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MagicEngine's website has been updated with some news about the mac release

"By the way, we will release a new Mac test version soon. We have fixed the gamepad direction problem, but still no luck with the DVD support. We have tried different ways to play audio tracks, but without success so far. :( "

03/02/2001 - DreamMSX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

DreamMSX's website has been updated with some news

"Great news from Jos! Keyboard characters will be selectable via joypad (to enter passwords in games like King's Valley 2), and tape device support (files would be saved in the VMU) is being worked on! That would allow saving in Metal Gear and probably other titles. A new, improved version of DreamMSX could come out within 2 or 3 weeks (I hope so ^_^)!

I'm adding a Tech section. It's a work-in-progress page, I'll add stuff in the future. (As soon as I get a working Cygwin environment ^_^).

Oh, and thanks to the guy who sent me the big Dreamcast logo, so I've made a logo for the news page. Ok, it may look a bit different from the small one, but, hey, I'm no graphic designer! ;)

Sad story : NeoRageX ported to Dreamcast ? Nah, really not. A dumb guy called "zerotolorence" had some fun lying to Dreamcast fans and pretending being a developer. I hope he's finished now, and he found some peace."

03/02/2001 - iGBA movies! [Posted by DarkMazda]

iGBA's website has been updated with 4 movies of iGBA running!! Looks pretty damn cool :D

03/03/2001 - MAME WIP! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAME WIP Page has been updated with some news

"3rd March 2001: David Haywood added Thunder Dragon to the Bombjack Twin driver. Marco Cassili partly fixed dip switch settings in Thunder Dragon. Olivier Galibert sped up Asterix graphics emulation. Nicola Salmoria added Blazing Tornado to the Metro driver, and fixed 8bpp tile support so that Bal Cube now works properly as well. Blazing Tornado however lacks background graphics. David Graves added the correct PROMs to the Darius driver. Jürgen Buchmüller fixed a few bugs in the NEC uPD7810 CPU core."

03/03/2001 - MESS WIP! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MESS WIP page has been updated with some more february 2001 updates

  • Saturday 17th February, 2001 - Ben Bruscella applied the MAME 0.37b12 source code changes to the MESS development tree. Nathan Woods merged in changes from MAME32 0.37b12 pre-release to the MESS32 development tree. Juergen Buchmueller added support for the 8X41, LH5801, SATURN and APEXC CPU cores to the MAME core, and applied some fixes to MESS to get it to build correctly with the new MAME source. Juergen also updated the SATURN CPU core for the "new" memory system.
  • Friday 16th February, 2001 - Nathan Woods fixed two minor timing bugs in the CoCo 3 and made a minor fix to device-related command line parsing in MESS32.
  • Thursday 15h February, 2001 - Ben Bruscella moved the CPU cores that were under the MESS directory into the MAME CPU directory and fixed a compile problem with dragon.c. Stefano Priore fixed the Unix makefile to conform with Ben's changes to MESS' CPU locations.
  • Wednesday 14th February, 2001 - Stefano Priore added IO_PARALLEL to the MESS core; some machines (e.g. Commodores) connect their printer to a special port, leaving the parallel port free for other uses. Raphael Nabet fixed a bug with disassembling the B instruction in the APEXC disassembler. For the APEXC CPU core, Raphael edited comments and added his own font and string display functions (the font is cleaner; it fixes a screenshot bug, and enables the driver to support special mathematical characters.) For the APEXC system driver, Raphael added a few comments and fixed I/O port support.

03/03/2001 - CPS2Shock release! [Posted by DarkMazda]
CPS2Shock has released the new xor table rom yesterday. It was for the game "Ring of Destruction (EURO 940902)". They have updated their websit with some news as well

"FinalBurn and the CPS-2 DAT files have been updated to include yesterdays Ring of Destruction release. Head on over to our downloads page to get them.

We will soon be receiving a large number of boards for dumping which need to be returned to the donator after (KevinDO). In order for this to happen we need money. Can you help? if so visit our donations page below. "

03/03/2001 - Bliss Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Bliss's website has been updated with some news on the next release of the emulator

"Whoops! I think I just figured out the reason so many people with really fast computers, but older video cards, are having troubles running Bliss at full speed using DirectX. Basically, due to a bug I just found, the DirectX code in Bliss was forcing some video cards to transfer up to 30 megabytes per second of texture data to the video card! Can you say, "My bad!"? This will obviously be fixed for the next release. Blame it on my new-ness to DirectX programming.

Also coming in the next release: Intellivoice emulation! Woohoo! This has been the single most-requested feature since Bliss was originally released, and it's finally almost here! You can thank Joe Zbiciak for doing all of the reverse engineering of the Intellivoice and providing me with all the technical info necessary to emulate it.

In addition to the Intellivoice, the sound emulation has been improved to include modeling of cross-channel modulation from amplitude clipping. What this means in plain English is that some sounds that were previously very "flat" in Bliss will now correctly "wow", "wobble", and "waver" like they should. Some specific examples of this include sounds like the tune that plays as Dracula rises from his tomb, the ending sound when you win a game of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and the vibrating organ sound at the start of a game of NFL Football.

There will also be several new language translations, thanks to those sending in language packs and updates, and some bug fixes. Stay tuned! "

03/03/2001 - RockNES 1.820! [Posted by DarkMazda]

RockNES version 1.820 has been released with these new things

  • Removed that FDS warning at startup (now displayed on FDS loading);
  • Some changes for ANSI compatibility, plus cosmetic changes and minor fixes.
And they have also updated their website with some things about this release!
"More... You run the emulator, the screen keeps black, you hit Ctrl+Alt+End to force a quit-to-OS. This is a strange problem with Allegro here:

    while(!sound_buffer)
    sound_buffer = get_audio_stream_buffer(sound_stream);

If someone knows how to fix it (infinite loop), e-mail me... "

03/03/2001 - Genital Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Genital(Genesis Emu)'s website has been updated with some news

"March 2, 2001: As was mentioned on JoseQ's Rumor Mill a few weeks back, I have been working on fixing up timing so that Bubble & Squeak, Desert Strike, Ranger-X, etc. will run. My initial attempts broke Streets of Rage 2, and I promised myself I would not release Genital until it was fixed again. Well, today I fixed it! I still have to do some more testing, but the few troublesome games I've been examining all seem to be happy.

I've also been working on my PSG engine, it sounds much better now thanks to help from Neil Bradley! There are still some nasty bugs, but hopefully these can be squashed soon. I'm going to have to write myself a Sound Blaster driver sometime in the near future. If all goes well, the next version of Genital will have PSG sound support, and maybe DAC sound. This probably won't happen for at least another month or 2. "

03/04/2001 - JoseQ Takes down roms:( [Posted by DarkMazda]

JoseQ has some bad news for you folks, it looks like his roms are gone... for now :(

"If you're wondering why I came to this decision, then I guess I should post a brief explanation as the reason is fairly simple. I just don't want to have any legal troubles, at all. Having the ROMs online risks everything that I've worked all my life to achieve, and I just don't think it's worth it. The ROMs area is probably the main reason why the sponsors for the site dropped support, and was also the part of the site with the lowest click-through rate (about 1 out of every 40,000 people would click on any one banner).
The ROMs section remains opened for informational/fun purposes. You can still see screenshots from the games, rate them, see their flyer, among other things. I will probably slowly but surely start posting public-domain ROMs, as they become available. "

03/04/2001 - Final Burn 0.110 has been released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

    + Added Quiz Nanairo Dreams
I would tell you whether it's working completely or not... but the amount of Japanese
text is so great, I doubt I'll ever be able to play it!

From what I can tell, it's fairly cute, it has a definite 'quiz' element,
it seems to runs fine, and if you speak Japanese I'm sure it will be perfectly playable!

03/05/2001 - Bliss v1.5! [Posted by DtK]

Well the best (IMHO) Intellivision emulator gets some even better fixes and features! When will this madness end?! Hopefully never. Well now that I've up and introduced a new version of Bliss you probably wanna know what's new...

  • Intellivoice support. (See whatsnew.txt for details)
  • Added modeling of cross-channel modulation. This should cause many of the loud, modulating, or vibrating sounds to be much more accurate. Thanks to Joe Zbiciak for the info necessary to do this.
  • Added a complete Spanish translation as well as full French and German translations. Thanks go to Juan Fernando Rivera Pernía, Florent Basset, and Kevin Werdelmann respectively for contributing these translations. Bliss now automatically detects and supports five different languages.
  • All of the Intellivision ROMs published by Joseph Zbiciak are now included in this release. These ROMs full under the GNU Public License (GPL) and have been included with the express permission of Joseph Zbiciak.
  • Fixed a bug in the DirectX support that caused Bliss to send far too much texture data over the graphics bus (by several orders of magnitude). This may finally fix the DirectX speed problems that plagued many users.
As the author stated the Intellivoice support was a bit tricky, so I hope everyone enjoys it :) You can get Bliss on our Intellivision Emu Page.

Mimic's website has been updated with some news

"Yes, I am still here AND I actually have some progress to report !!! :)

Anyways, I updated the compatipility page...
I have made up my mind that I will do an "as-is" release considering its been over 3 months since a release. Its amazing when you think of it that a certain emulator has done over 100 releases in those 3 months and I havent done jack :)
When is the big question....just stay tuned OK.... "

03/07/2001 - ePSXe v1.2.0 News! [Posted by DtK]

Well I am happy to bring you some news on the next version of Playstation emulator, ePSXe. All news is from PSXEmu so a big thanks to them for this.

Some new features coming for ePSXe include a very familiar and popular feature in emulators: save states! Also they are pre-compressed to be a cool 1 MB of space as opposed to some large one.

Another cool feature is the addition of the dual shock function. Basically if you have a USB controller that supports dual shock you can now use it for ePSXe thus further enhancing your playing experience!

As far as compatability it is only slightly increased and details are still sketchy. Though Bobbi (PSXEmu) is reporting some minor speed increases of about 10-30% depending on game which is always good news! This is based on mainly some code rewriting and optimizing. And the bug for hitting F4 while saving/loading on memcards has been fixed!

There is no definite date on the release that I know of so I won't guess. Please head to PSXEmu for Bobbi's full report on this.

03/09/2001 - MAME WIP ! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAME WIP page has been updated with some news and screenshots of Gladiator :)

Ernesto Corvi and Nicola Salmoria added support for dual K053260 sound chips, fixing sound in Over Drive. Nicola Salmoria also fixed bad sound in Asterix. Phil Stroffolino sent in a driver for Gladiator. Marco Cassili fixed some dip switch settings in Rolling Thunder and Konami Twin16 games."

03/09/2001 - PSinex Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

PSinex's website has been updated with some news with a new member in their team!

"I would like to take this opportunity, and welcome a new member to the PSinex team. Neo Maximus is now working on the Dynamic Recompiler of PSinex. From what I've already seen on the source, he's doing a good job, and no doubt, he likes working on it. So welcome to the Team, NeoMax!

I personally am doing some speed optimizes to the Interpreter, and I can already say, that its speed is no more - no less, 40% faster than the old PSinex. Another breakthrough, is that i've managed to code the emulator in a specific way, so that it doesnt need an external BIOS image to run... No more BIOS file distributions for us... hehe. But of course for full compatibility it will support the good old way as well.

And as for the "Secret" member, which has a good knowledge of PSX hardware, is working to the last details of the Configurator, before he starts the CD-ROM routines."

"I feel so lonely... no Company. :) Bad pun... oh well. Anyway... I restarted beta testing for Apollo. A select 4 people have gotten the chance to be part of the team. You will recognize them as webmasters for a couples sites who were in the right place at the right time. I am sure you will see screenshots and reports next week from then in regards the beta I plan on giving them Friday. Just to let you know I am still kicking... I just don't care to be so public... It was never really my intent to publicize this emulator in the first place. Now I feel obligated to provide more support with the increased visitors. ciao."

Gnuboy(Gameboy Emu) version 0.9.8 has been released (Source, DOS, Win32 ports). Here is what is new

  • enabled support for dmg sprite sorting; not sure it works yet
  • added "sprsort" rcvar to toggle this since it's usually not needed
  • fixed a potential crash that could happen if sound init failed on dos
  • added native SDL sound support
  • fixed lots of bugs in the SDL port
  • removed stupid sys_realtime() function in favor of the simple ANSI C time()
  • roms can now be loaded from stdin by specifying - as the rom name
  • removed lots of useless bloat from system interface modules
  • take advantage of ANSI atexit() to simplify termination logic
  • hide mouse cursor with SDL
  • SDL fullscreen mode
  • optional alt+enter fullscreen toggle for SDL
  • SDL rcvars sdl_fullscreen and sdl_altenter to control these features
  • changed bswapl to bswap in asm to make it work on mingw32
  • added ram size code 05 for 4 banks, this seems to make Pokemon Crystal work
  • backed out hack for Altered Space and W&W because it broke other games
  • new code to make them work, hopefully this time it's right
  • now we give an error on unknown rom/ram size to prevent crashing
  • integrated Windows port by mewse
Please Download GnuBoy from our Gameboy Emu Section. Thanks goes to Gilgamesh for the E-mail.

03/09/2001 - Final Burn v0.111 [Posted by DtK]

Oh yeah! A new version of Dave's amazing emulator, Final Burn has been released! This time adding support for the recent release from CPS-2 Shock, "19XX: War Against Destiny (USA)!" Both this and the release are great great news, the 1900 series is one of my favorites.

On a few side notes about this release Dave says that FB was not really made for vertical games yet. He is thinking 512x384 or 1024x768 for resolution with scanlines of course. Here is his first shot :)

You can get FB here.

03/10/2001 - ZSNES at SourceForge! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like ZSNES has a page up at SourceForge. Since they are now Open Source, they will be making a Development page etc.. check them out here

03/10/2001 - ZSNES Update [Posted by DtK]

Well it appears the ZSNES crew have been busy lately. Just the other day on the ZSNES Message Board zsKnight gave us an update on his emulator and it goes a little something like this:

    "Hey everyone!

Anyways, a lot of (bad) things have happened lately. I was sick for a couple weeks, then a couple weeks of exams, quizzes, and homework followed right after. Now I'm pretty much free of those stuff, but I'm also quite exhausted at the same time. Plus I also started to help out in a different (non-emulation -- sorry) project. But anyways, the source code is pretty much ready to be released now (all the GPL headers are in, a very simple documentation written, etc). There are, however, a couple things small things I want to do before releasing a new version of ZSNES. There are also about a month and a halfs worth of e-mails that I haven't gone through yet, so I should go through that soon for those who are waiting for replies. And also, teuf helped us set up a sourceforge page (Thanks teuf!). It is located here:

    zsnes.sourceforge.net

I will upload the source files there once I feel that it's fully ready.

Also, for those who want to know what's going on with ZSNES, here's the list of what will be in the next version so far:

    • Fixed Empire Strikes Back crashing bug in the millenium falcon sequence (hopefully this will fix some other games too)
    • Removed all self-modifying code in ZSNES. This will make ZSNES crash a lot less on certain systems, especially during mode 7 sequences. Thanks Ivar!
    • Implemented S-RTC chip, using the system clock as the actual time (The game will make you set the time though, but it will just be replaced with the system time in-game). Thanks to John Weidman and Dark Force for the info on this chip!
    • Fixed crashing bug in certain mosaic scenes (eg. FF3 Phantom Forest) in the new graphics engine
    • Fixed a nasty crashing/corruption bug in the new graphics engine (both 8bit and 16bit)
    • SPC7110 emulation! This is based on the information reverse engineered by the hard working folks at dejap translations, Dark Force and John Weidman.
    • Altered HiROM/LoROM detection a bit - Fievel goes West works now
    • kode54 got the in-game clock working for the windows port. Thanks kode54!
Well that's it for now, I know it's a few days late but better late than never :)

03/14/2001 - EmuLoader release! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuLoader's website has been updated with a new release and something new

"1. Frontend customization finally implemented (change colors, fonts, etc)

    2. ROMs recognition by CRC number. This means that if Emu Loader don't find the ROM name, it will search other files in the zip for one that has the correct CRC number... Valid for merged clone games only when building the games database.

The audit process is also updated. In this case, all kind of sets that has non-standard MAME ROMs names, have the CRC searching enabled. There are three possible cases for a valid CRC search in case the ROM name is not found:
"Master games", "Clone games" and "Clone merged games".

The only type of CRC that is not included in this feature is those that are all zeroes, "00000000", like the ones on CPS-2 games.

    3. Custom Games Manager 100% fixed and running smoothly (if you follow the tutorial, of course)... ;-)
There was a couple of errors in the source code that was generating a lot of "access violation" errors..."
Then there was an update
I've made a small update to the audit process. Nothing changed, except that now this feature is a bit faster (deleted unnecessary code from the audit procedure that was being executed twice or even more for each ROM audited...)

Get the fixed files on downloads page (binary and source code)!

03/14/2001 - CD-i updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]
CD-i's website has been update couple of times with some updates

    "* UPDATE 04:59 14/03/01 *
Well, seems my screen handling wasn't as bad as i thought :-), it was a missing system function that was screwing
everything up (wasn't clearing out the CD-i screen control tables so there were lots of extra instructions in there).
I've done a few grabs of the intro (realtime stream) and the menu screen. The game palette is really screwed at the
moment, I think its possible that my copy of rise (wasn't a final version) may have bugs in it (i kinda remember the screen
going like it is now. See below for screengrabs anyway

    * UPDATE 02:36 14/03/01 *

Well, the weekend was for shit coding wise, basically went round in a big circle after rewriting a couple of
rountines twice trying to squash a bug. It ended up being something really simple and stupid, I won't tell u what
    cuz you'll laugh :-)

Anyway, the latest news is, I just played Rise of the Robots on the emulator :-)
Screen is screwed up but i sort of expected that because there are a lot of splits and other weird things going on.
Also the emulated CD-i has stopped recognising the joypad !?!? it doesn't mean it won't work, it just thinks its a file
on the disk!! (sounds weird eh? bloody device crazy donkeymonkeys!!)
oh, well, another stupid mistake I suppose.
Anyway, I'm gonna try and fix the screen handling now, and if I get it sorted by about 08:00 I'll do some screengrabs
    and upload them..
Might be a realease in the next couple of days, eh Martin :)"

03/17/2001 - Chaiman and President of Sega Passes Away [Posted by DtK]

That's right a man many of us know because he has brought us great memories has passed away. Yesterday in Tokyo Isao Okawa died of heart failure. His memories will certainly live on through his company. During his time at Sega he gave us systems like the Master System, Genesis, and Dreamcast! Not to mention a few fell short. Please read the article on sega.com about him here.
