  • - Ridge Racer with Emboss filter
  • - Zelda using the "Maschendrahtzaun" filter (hello to all the german users)

AdriPSX site has been updated with some news!

"I want to apologize, as yesterday while testing some games I found out that a last moment change in the source code of AdriPSX ends as a very important bug in the Dynamic Recompilation Core. The bug has been already fixed (was a very silly one), I´ll put fixed and a very little more updated binaries on-line just tomorrow in the morning. This bug causes malfunction only when running commercial games, demos that do not use CDROM are suposed to run alright."

04/02/2000 - MAMED and MESSD version 0.36 RC2 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAMED/MESSD version 0.36RC2 has been released!

"This release is a must for everyone with a Kodak DC290 because I fixed the power off problem on the DC290! Should make using the camera to play games much less frustrating. I also added a speed up hack that can be enabled in the first menu. It reduces the number of CPU context switches to only one per frame, because some drivers have this set parameter way too high. This will only work with some of the drivers with multiple CPU's, some may crash, but for the few that it does work for you should notice a dramatic speed increase. Check out games like Galaga, Dig Dug and Xevious."
Please download MAMED from our MAME Emu Section and download MESSD from our Multi Console emu Section.

04/03/2000 - Meka 0.52 released to registered users! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Meka's birthday today and they have released version of 0.52 to registered users! Here is what is new

    Meka 0.52
    ---------
Compatibility rates as of version 0.52:

    Master System: 99.72%
(not perfect because of the Japanese version of Ys).
    Sega Game 1000: 100.00%
    Sega Computer 3000: 100.00%
(excluding emulation of optional peripherals such as the Sega Printer)
    Game Gear: 95.03%
(excluding gear-to-gear emulation used by certains two players games)

    - Fixed the minor glitches in:
    - Back to the Future 2
(black section flickering between the road and status bar)
    - Gangster Town
(little line of skyblue pixels on the top of the car in the first scene)
    - Operation Wolf
(minor graphic glitches on the top of the bottom bar when shooting)

Tested Wonderboy in Monsterworld on a real system and confirmed the minor
glitch when the menu is vertically scrolling is a bug in the game itself.

Did some research about Ys (J/FM), with help from Toshi.
It is not considered anymore as a bad dump. The bug happening in Meka also
happens when using a real Game Gear or a Megadrive with an adapter.
However the game show a perfect status bar on a Japanese Master System,
so the bad behavior is considered as a bug of Meka, even if in the first
place it is due to a bug in the game code taking advantage of an odd
behavior of the Japanese Master System.

    Also:
    - Improved run-time TMS9918 video mode detection.
    - Fixed Hyper Pro Yakyuu 92 (GG).
    - Reduced flickers in NBA Action (GG).
    - Fixed freezing until a key is pressed when loading the Japanese BIOS.
    - Fixed yet another silly bug introduced in previous version and screwing
some SC-3000 software such as the Sega Basic.
    - Added new entrys to compatibility and checksum lists. Also redone
SC-3000 list with names corrections for Japanese educational softwares.
    - Fixed potential VDP bug - wasn't affecting any games, but could have.
    - Implemented MAME Z80 CPU Core but did not enabled it in the public
version as it doesnt bring anything better than Marat's core: they
are on par, but MAME license is quite limiting.
    - Improved documentation inside of the MEKA.BLT file.
    - Fixed a bunch of minor bugs. Fixed handing of ROM smaller than eight
kilobytes. Fixed empty entry creation in the VFN database. Fixed a bug
in windows repositionning when changing resolution.
    - Reduced executable size.

    And also:
    - Added background picture caching for a faster switch to the GUI when
a big image is used on background.
    - Added a bunch of new themes into the distribution package.
Background pictures for some of the themes are available on a new
    site at http://www.emucamp.com/meka/themes
    - As of now the PICS/ directory should be considered as the one everyone
have to use to share themes easily. You can still have your own themes
    pictures stored anyway, anyway.

Please visit the Meka website.

04/04/2000 - Pretendo Site updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo site has been updated with some news. Here is what they have posted

"It's come quite a long way since, and we'd like to celebrate by putting out this release, exactly one year after it's first. We hope this release to be quite a nice one. We've re-done the DirectSound code from scratch, and the output is much cleaner now. All it needs is some tweaking, and the sound will be good to go.... minus the DPCM channel. No biggie. We'll add it some time later. In terms of plugins, we've finalized the format for the CPU. The next release will include four (4) 6502 cores. The main will be Neil Bradley's, which has been with us since the first WIP, Shu Kondo's (seen in BioNES), and two more from our good friend TNSe. TNSe has been kind enough to write plugins for both his interpretive and recompiling cores! If you haven't tried out his emulator, you should definitely give it a go. Please visit the NESten homepage here. Moving along, Pretendo's compatibility has increased quite a lot since the last release. We now support nearly 40 mappers! They aren't all 100%, but most of them work real nicely. Hopefully we'll be able to finish up the Mapper plugin system soon. We're workin' on it. Look out for a nice release in a couple of days. Cheers."
Please visit Pretendo.

04/04/2000 - Snes9x Journal News Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Snes9x Journal has been updated with AWESOME NEWS!!!

"Anti Resonance has very kindly rewritten large parts of his super-fast SPC700 and sound DSP assembler emulation code to make it 32-bit friendly, the code works fine for him but I'm having all sorts of problems. Some games work, then hang, others appear to work but remain completely silent, the remainder hang at start up. My guess is that his code only ever has to work in preinitialised environment in SPC Tool, but in Snes9x the boot-strap and inter-CPU comm. ports come into play, so the that's likely where the problem(s) must be.

To add to my problems, Anti's code is written using a TASM assembler, something I don't have and isn't free. At the moment I can't even make changes to his code to help debug the problem, so I'm forced the link in .obj files e-mailed to me by the author. Since they are .obj files, I can't even use them in the Linux port and its only the Linux port that has all my SNES debug code built-in.

Three weeks on and I'm still nowhere near getting the code to a releasable state. I'm going to have to bite-the-bullet and convert the source code to NASM format, then I'll be able to build the source on Linux, Windows and DOS. I can then make changes and debug it much more easily under Linux. Since the whole process is likely to take a few more weeks, I've put it on hold for the moment and switched back to working on netplay...

...I've changed the protocol again on netplay, trying to reduce the amount of information that has to be sent between machines during normal game play, especially useful if the people you're playing against are at the far end of a slow modem link. I've also added sequence numbers to make the protocol more robust.

If you're on a local area network, or have a cable modem, I've added an option to send ROM images from the server session to the other players. Other options include send freeze files and sync all players using a freeze file.

Although netplay is working, its far too easy for two or more Snes9x sessions to get out of sync at the moment. For example, if you drag or resize the Snes9x window, DirectX blocks access to the screen for the duration and the emulation pauses, but the server session continues to send out heartbeat messages which other Snes9x sessions receive and continue playing. What needs to happen is that the netplay client thread needs to spot when DirectX has blocked the main emulation thread and send a pause message to the server. Similarly, when a menu or dialog box is visible, or when the player attempts to load up a new ROM or freeze file, again the server needs to be informed."
Woohoo Netplay =) Thats some good news here. Please visit Snes9x website.

Win32 - 3.April.2000, build 119

04/04/2000 - NesToy v4.0 [Posted by Lycia]

A new version of NesToy, the NES ROM management utility, has been released! Here's a list of what's new:

  • Significant changes have been made to the database structure. DO NOT try to use the database with previous versions of NesToy.
  • The entire directory structure has been changed. ROMs are now sorted by region. Regions have been broken down into North America (USA/Canada), Japan, Europe, and Asia.
  • ROMs from specific countries in a region (not counting USA and Japan) will automatically have a country code attached.
  • The unlicensed directory has been removed. Unlicensed ROMs are now sorted into their appropriate region directory and can be optionally sorted into an Unlicensed directory under that region.
  • A PD directory has been added for Freeware/Public Domain ROMs.
  • Added a directory "Other" for ROMs that are unclassified. Anything sorted into the "Other" directory needs to be classified and placed somewhere else.
  • -sub now scans directories 6 levels deep.
  • Added SORT_UNLICENSED to nestoy.cfg. This determines whether unlicensed ROMs will be further sorted into an Unlicensed directory underneath their appropriate region directory.
  • Added TAG_UNLICENSED to nestoy.cfg. Setting this to TRUE will attach an (Unl) to all unlicensed ROMs when renaming.
  • Many internal changes because of new database structure. Please report any bugs you may find, especially if they weren't there in previous versions of NesToy.
  • Pirate ROMs will now be tagged with (Pirate Cart) if they are known to have been dumped from an actual cartridge.
  • All of the "Pirate Original" ROMs like Somari, Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter 3, etc. are currently in the "Other" directory. I currently have no idea where to place these. The pirate directory is reserved for ROMs pirated from actual NES games so I do not want these there.
  • If a ROM has a ??? in the output listing instead of a country code, it is because I do not know where this ROM was released. If you know, please let me know!

Whew! What an update.

You can grab a copy by downloading the following file:

04/05/2000 - Sega 32x Emulator? [Posted by Lycia]
I was sitting around in #rareroms on EFNET this morning when I heard word of a working 32x emulator. The emulator appears to work for certain games, while the others don't show up in the emulator at all. Some games that appear to work are:

  • Judge Dredd
  • Doom - Sprites and Bitmaps only
  • FIFA International Soccer '96

My question is, is why didn't the author release this?

At any rate, you're going to need BIOS images to get the emulator working, however, I can't link them to the Moonlit Coalition because of ZTNET/Emulation World's policies. So you're going to have to scope them out yourself. You might want to drop by #rareroms on EFNET and look around.

You can download it by grabbing the following file:

Thanks to #rareroms for this great discovery.

04/06/2000 - Pretendo News [Posted by Lycia]

The Pretendo site has been updated with news regarding the emulator. The author has implemented plug-in mapper support and talks about bug fixes. Here's what he had to say:

OK, I figured that I would give updating a wurl for once. I have made a lot of progress with Pretendo lately. First of all I have fixed the problem of Pretendo continuing to receive input even when out of focus. Also I have made it so Pretendo automatically pauses emulation when it loses focus ... this is kind of useful if you are playing and suddenly you receive a message on AIM or ICQ, it wont interfere with your game. I just finished mapper plugins. They are 100% compatible with NESten's mapper dlls ... in fact we share the format. So if Pretendo doesn't support a mapper yet, you can just through a mapper dll in the mapper directory (which you define) and viola...supported. Pretendo also has it's usually slew of mappers internally, so if you are missing a mapper dll...it will fall back on the internal ones.

Stay tuned for more news regarding this emulator.

And if you have a few hit titles under your belt, it's a MAJOR plus. Frilly pieces of paper from institutes of higher learning are welcome, but not nearly as important as your code."

04/07/2000 - Mame 32 [Posted by neohaze]

Theres Been a Status Update on the Mame32 Quality Assurance Page of How the Current Official Mame32 (37b1) Build is Coming Along

00.04.06 First build of .37b1 from Michael, this build includes the above mentioned support for icons.zip in the \icons directory [this saved me about 34megs of slack on the 40gig 32k cluster system], and also adds a new feature from RenH, the ability to ctrl-r and select and play a random game. Nice for those of us old timers who want to be shocked and surprised w/ what gets chosen.

00.04.07 Added screenshots and icons for b1, pri. 1 test case completed, readme.htm, support.htm updated for icons.zip.

Certainly Sounds Promising, I don't know how close to a release we are but there weren't any problems Mentioned in that update so It could only be a few days.

04/10/2000 - Speccyal News [Posted by Lycia]

The Speccyal site has been updated with some news on the Sinclair Spectrum emulator. Here's what they had to say:

Not only am I working on the sound, but right now I'm adding support for Neil Bradley's excellent z80 cpu core (MZ80). Keyboard/joystick is already working as are 30-40 % of the games I have tested until now. There is something wrong with interrupts I think but it shouldn't take too long before I discover where it comes from. My new sound code is better in some cases (it plays at the right pitch) and worst in some others (some musics aren't playing anymore)."

Looks like the next version could be great.

    Stay tuned.

Corn website has been updated with some new info! Here is what they have posted on their website

Thanks a lot to people who reported the EAccess Violation problem. Now, here are three workarounds:
      1. Instead of clicking on Corn02.exe, drag CornL.exe and drop it to Corn02.exe. This solution is found by Diego D.
      2. Install Corn on C:\Windows\Temp. This solution is found by DeadLust and Olivier M.
      3. Start Corn from a Floppy disk. This solution is found by WagnerKL.

Also, I got many new language translations. Great thanks to DesktopMan for the Norwegian trans, to [D]J for the Italian trans, to RaZoR14 for another Dutch trans, to MiGa, Stefan P, Peter H, Kanne, AiRWOLF, MarcDK and Kojote for German trans. Since I don't understand these languages, it's beyond me to choose from or combine them and I believe they are all good translations. So I put all of them into the new updated Corn.lan file.
Please get the lan file and visit their website at http://www.emuhq.com/corn.

04/11/2000 - EmuDX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuDX website has been updated also! Here is what they have posted

"Vega again: Over the last few days my Poser skills have increased dramatically, so the screenshot I posted last time looks like pure crap compared to what's possible now. Another idea in process is to add animated cut-scenes to Kung-Fu-Master. This would be an optional file that would give you a few seconds of video between stages and maybe an ending as well.

In related news, I can even add real faces into my 3D models now. The first celebrity guest appearance will be Michael Clarke Smith, star of The Green Mile, playing the part of the level 3 boss. If you have any suggestions for the other characters, send me an e-mail, or find me or MikeDX on Efnet; we're usually hanging around #emudx. "

AGES has been updated also with some news!

"Yesterday was the one year birthday of AGES, the first real 32X emulator in existence, and I had hoped to have the full version of AGES ready for release, but studying for the huge test I had this morning took precedence. Coincidentally, over the weekend, I finally got Knuckles Chaotix to run again, which was originally the holdup in releasing AGES. I hope to have a delayed birthday present ready sometime soon... "

Geoshock now has its own Domain at www.geoshock.com, far easier to remember :)

As You may know I'm no longer part of the Geoshock team, I'm looking at my options at the moment. Doing something for Burnknuckle, maybe a bit for EmuHappenings and Some News Here too.. NeoGeo Related is sounding quite good to me.. I'll make up my mind in a few days. Please Note, I don't have anything against katharsis or Opi, nor the hosts Arcade@Home, so no flaming them.. They've got better things to do with their time than read flame mail.

04/14/2000 - Windows Key Disabler [Posted by neohaze]

This might be common knowledge to many, but after reading it on the MAME Message Board, and having a nightmare with the problem myself I feel its worth Posting. If you've got anything like a recent system you're likely to have a Windows Keyboard, with the Windows Keys.. Hit them during your session of DOSMame under windows, what happens? Up Pops Windows and in many cases bye bye goes your emulation. Well. A Quick Drop by on ArcadeControls in their Downloads > Utilities Section gives you 2 little applications (5.9k and 2k) that you can use to disable these keys. No More accidentally hitting them and regreting it :) The Site also contains numerous other freeware/sharware tools and obviously some good instructions on building your own Arcade Controls :)

"It took a lot of time to come but here it is, the first release of my Multiple Console and Handheld Emulator (MCHE)! It is not the final version, so don't be surprised if you encounter a bug or something (I'm sure you will). The Game Boy and the Sega 8-BITs drivers really sucks. The only GB game you can play is Super Mario Land, and Sega games don't work well either. The only thing good to see is the NES driver. The GFX engine sucks, but many games are playable but most aren't because of the GFX engine. Anyway, this is just a BETA release, so don't complain about anything please."

Ah well, if it just worked it would be unusual, right? :)"

    04/16/2000 - Resignation. . . [Posted by Lycia]

I regret to announce that I am leaving DarkMazda's Domain. My reasons are many so I won't list them here. I have enjoyed working at this site, but my time is done here. I currently have too much on the go and I don't have time to update as many sites as I do. One is too much, let alone 4, and it gets draining after a while. The site that PACHUKA and I own, EmuCult, is expanding and we're getting bigger and I need to spend time with it. Me and a few of my friends are also brainstorming a site that might make it big. Time will only tell.

I'd like to thank Jason (DarkMazda) for giving me the opportunity to work at a great site.

    As always, . . .

    Stay tuned!

    • (Re)added mess 0.37b1, including everything that's new.
    • The solaris sound drivers now uses AUDIODEV if set thanks to: Keith Hargrove.
    • Made sound update synchronious with video update, this should improve sound quality.
    • Fixed a crash when running with -nosound -fakesound.
    • Added detection of buggy FreeBSD newpcm driver, and fallback to timerbased audio when detected.
    • Slightly changed the fragsize calculation in the oss dsp plugin, again, it now uses slightly smaller frags, which should increase sound quality a bit.
    • Changed the default soundbufsize to 3.0, this is still smaller as before the default bufsize before the sound rewrite, and it seems that the 2.0 was a bit to optimistic.
Please download the source and the upgrade from our MAME Emu Section.

04/17/2000 - Hyperion Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Hyperion site has been updated with a big post :) Here is the post

"I seem to have hit another lovely snag, this time in the form of what I believe is the command to check the copy protection of a Saturn CD. This command is, of course, undocumented. That the system is bothering to do this is probably a good sign, but I have yet to figure out what kind of response it is seeking, so the system hangs waiting for a response it will never get. I did manage to get a minor speedup by altering the way memory is accessed. I'll be gone for a few days (starting today), so no updates until later this week. If TyRaNiD can get his Saturn development kit up and running on the Datel Action Replay I have I think things will move much more smoothly, as I would be able to code up samples of questionable things and view the results on the real box. Or if anyone has the EMS PAR 4-in-1 and the PC Comms card to go with it and is willing to sell/loan it to me let me know."
Please visit the Hyperion website for more information

Yage(GB Emu) and iYage(GB Debugger for Win) version 0.05 is released! Here is what both of them support

    • iYage can only debug Type 0 Cartridge (Rom Only) because it's not yet ready for bank switching.
Please download Yage and iYage from our GB Emu Section.

04/17/2000 - Gem 0.4 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Gem(GB emu for MSX) version 0.4 is released! Here is what is new

    • GEM now runs in R800 ROM-mode on turboR's. The DRAM-mode was causing hangs when loading 256kB ROMs on 512kB machines and GEM probably didn't work on 256kB turboR's at all. This has no negative effect on speed, since GEM doesn't use any ROM routines during emulation anyway.
    • Preliminary sprite support! Missing in sprite support is: 8x16 sprites, X/Y flipping, alternate sprite palette. Sprite colors can be configured in the config file. In the future multiple sprite renderers will be selectable, for now it's listed in the config as renderer 4.
    • The no-raster-effect-supporting renderers now take their display info from the center of the screen. This makes more games playable without the need for raster effect support. [Megaman, Castlevania 2]
    • All renderers take their smooth scroll values and background palette from the center of the screen. This fixes small scroll glitches some games were having, and minimizes color flicker. [R-Type]
    • Emulated Serial I/O registers and interrupt generation, makes more games work. [F1 Spirit, Bubble Bobble]
    • Different video renderers selectable in config file.
    • Lowered memory requirements, now 64kB ROMs can be run with 256kB RAM.
    • Debounced keypresses in configuration mode, GEM sometimes mistakingly detected a single keypress twice
    • Sped up VRAM pattern writes.
    • New video renderer with the following features:
      • Raster effects: scrolling, display map change, pattern base change
      • Only refreshes parts of the screen that are actually changed
      • Integrated pattern conversion routines that only refresh patterns that are actually on-screen
      • Page flipping for smooth scrolling
      • Horizontal and vertical scrolling
      • Displays actual Gameboy screen only

    • Fixed black screen on exit. [Laurens Holst]

Please pick up GEM 0.4 from our GB Emu Section.

    • 18th April 2000: Martin Buchholz sent in a Poly-Play driver (the only arcade machine ever produced in GDR, the former East Germany) with thanks to Jürgen Oppermann, Volker Hann and the Videogame Museum in Berlin (especially to Jan-Ole Christian) - without them, the driver would not have been reality. Phil Stroffolino fixed some tilemap bugs and he fixed Kyros' graphics decoding. Jürgen Buchmüller added some extra information to -listinfo output.
    • 17th April 2000: Zsolt Vasvari did some cleanups to the Cinematronics driver, fixed a 16-bit bug in the artwork functions and he also fixed a Donkey Kong graphics bug. Bryan McPhail added the world romset to Super Burger Time.
    • 16th April 2000: Ernesto Corvi updated the K053260 ADPCM decoding to use a better algorithm, and the sound is much better. Aaron Giles fixed some cpunum_get_* functions' bugs.

04/19/2000 - SSF Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SSF(Saturn Emu) site has been updated with some news! Here is the translated version from VGN

"It's been about three weeks since last update. However it's not progressed at all. After rebuilding graphics engines, some software won't boot. It means I have to renew graphics routines from day one.

All about graphics about SEGA SATURN are terribly complex that some functions are not emulated yet. Though most of them are left unused, it's no use illustrating each of them, so don't ask me why,and please accept as it is.

I'll upload a new version after fixing sprite relatings. But even I don't know when it comes to public..."

Good job! Thanks goes to VGN for the info :D

Well, in any case: sorry for the lack of updates again, but the university really got me stressed out. But now I'm at home for the next two weeks so I can pull myself 1000% in the project. Ah, still another thing: We're still looking for some translators here that could help Celes. She's stressed out in RL too, so every help would be appreciated. As for me, I'll see if I can get someone on our ship."
This is great news :D I might actually go back in to some translating again. Please visit our YnT at Here.
