05/14/2003 - Sony going Portable! [Posted by DarkMazda]
It looks like Sony is going portable! Now this is some good news! The system is going to have a screen of 4.5" and here is what it is going to feature!
- UMD or Universal Media Device. This storage media is 60mm, about half the size of the traditional CD and has a capacity of 1.8GB. That's right GB. Expect massively complex, detailed gaming (for your handheld anyway). 2.4 inches.
- ATRAC encoding support (Sony's proprietary sound format used in their minidiscs). This could mean it will be a multi-media device.
- Graphics specs are also impressive: NURB technology for rendering with full 3D polygons.
- The unit's widescreen LCD screen (480x272, that's the coveted 16:9 ratio we all love) will be backlit.
- The unit's sound processing will feature full 3D sound, PCM, and will be "fully reconfigurable."
- MIPS 32-bit processor.
- Also, a secure ROM cartridge for anti-piracy efforts.
- Super-one-chip solution for graphics, sound, etc.
- Memory stick will be used for game saves. Also, for GPS functionality.
- Rechargeable battery.
- CPU: 90 nanometers with a clock speed TBD.
- USB 2.0 connection for talking to your PC, cellphone, even your PS2.
- Embedded RAM.
- Supports additional video codecs (other than MPEG 4.)
This sounds amazing! I really can't wait for this one. Here are some links you could try to read more info and photos!

You can go wireless with your gameboy advance! Wow indeed. Thanks goes to WiNGnuT for the news about this! I will be taking feedbacks over at the General Emulation Board
05/19/2003 - KEGA Lazarus SE R3 release [Posted by DarkMazda]
KEGA(SMS/GG/Genesis/MegaCD Emulator) version SE R3 has been released! Here is what is new
- * Began testing SMS games and adding them to an internal list. Kega now knows that certain games only run correctly with the right country code, and it uses this list to make the "auto detect" function work better. There are probably more games that need adding, they will be done as they become known to me.
- * Fixed problem with occasional SSM file corruption, which occured if some games were loaded and then the emulator was immediately exited.
- * Changed Joystick Button Detection routines, this should solve any further problems people have had with certain joysticks.
- * Kega now allows you to change the country code of the SegaCD while it is running. This is not recommended, expect glitches and other incorrect operation if you do this - but it was requested, and so it can now be done.
- * Changed RESET CONSOLE to SOFT RESET.
- * Changed POWER OFF CONSOLE to POWER OFF, and added POWER ON/HARD RESET. If you use the POWER ON/HARD RESET option while in POWER OFF status, the SMS will start up without a cartridge, enabling you to use the games in some SMS BIOSes.
- * Fixes to the PSG Core, stuff that was fixed once, but got lost. This fixes hanging notes in Alex Kidd, among other things.
- * Fixed positioning of GameGear sprites in Normal mode.
- * Fixed SMS/GG Expanded Sprites problem.
- * Changed YM2612 core slightly, now SuperHQ mode sounds closer to Normal mode in certain cases where it should. I will probably have to experiment with this some more (sigh) at a later date.
- * Wrote a YM2413 core, as found in the Japanese SMS. This core should be pretty accurate, I used a lot of knowledge learned from the YM2612 - but since I neither have anything containing a YM2413, nor have I ever heard a real YM2413, I had to rely on information already available on this chip. I used the latest MAME core by Jarek Burczynski as reference, this guy has done a lot of reverse engineering on this chip, and has found the exact behaviour of things like the Rhythm section - and this is the information I needed. Note that the source was used for information only, and no code was used in the Kega core - which is 100% ASM. I also use the instrument table which Jarek says is "very close" to accurate. Use SuperHQ for best results.
- * Added option in SMS/GG options to disable the YM2413 core. Some games will use the YM2413 if present, and the PSG if not. This enables you to listen to either version.
- * Added support for the Genesis Security "BIOS". This works the same way as the SMS/GG BIOSes - if you leave it blank, no BIOS will be used. Note that the BIOS is only triggered after a hard reset - I am unsure of the behaviour of a real Genesis with Security BIOS and Soft Resetting, but this BIOS always clears the RAM and various hardware registers, making soft reset completely pointless. So I disabled it for soft reset instead.
- * Added support for a "bug" in the original SMS VDP, that was fixed in the SMS2 and GG VDPs. The Japanese version of Y's uses this bug to its advantage, so his is enabled when this game is loaded. I thought this was worth doing now that I've added YM2413 support, because the Japanese version of Y's has some decent YM2413 music :) Thanks to Charles MacDonald (as ever) for finding out how this bug operates.
- * Added Stereo PSG support for the GameGear (finally!)
- * Added support for the 93C46 EEPROM used by a few GameGear games.
- * Fixed the SMS game "Pitfighter", which was doing nasty things and causing problems.
- * Fixed the SMS game "California Games 2", and made a slight adjust to the timing of all consoles, which should have been done before.
- * Fixed the GG game "Rise of the Robots"
- * Fixed the GG game "Ecco the Dolphin", which seems to still check for the SMS reset button - which does not exist on the GG...
Quite a few new things! Please download KEGA from their Official Site

05/19/2003 - AstroHawk Update! [Posted by DarkMazda]
We have been offering "AstroHawk", which is a Free SNES Rom, which base the game off of "Asteroids". I have recieved an e-mail couple days back from Paul Lay, the author and he has sent me an update on AstroHawk. Here is what Paul had to say about the new version.
"Many years ago Astrohawk stopped running on emulators, but as it worked on real h/w I figured it wasn’t my fault. However, having just done a bit of debugging I’ve found that I had some data being used by the VBI which wasn’t initialized until after a selection had been made from the title screen. Whoops! The date on the title screen source file was 1998 so it’s taken me 5 years to fix this one. The program now runs on ZSNES 1.36 and Snes9x 1.39 and while I was at it, I’ve added music and sound effects"
I have tried the new version out and I can definitely tell a huge improvement over the older version. The music sounds very well done as well! It might be a little hard to control at first but once you get used to it, its a real fun free rom from Paul Lay. Thanks Paul for the new update! Please download the new version of AstroHawk from our Free SNES Roms Section.

MAME version 0.69 has been released! Here is what is basically new
"Mainly a bugfix release for problems discovered with new features in 0.68,
it also further clears the backlog. Put together by David Haywood,
If you submit changes please make sure they're up to date with the latest
source code, if not it means more work for us in sorting them out.
Several people have asked about the SHA1Merger program for updating their
own drivers, if you need this it should be on www.mame.net within a few
hours of this release.
Note, we are aware of some problems with the Direct 3D core which cause
some games to function incorrectly (Rolling Thunder title screen, Hard
Drivin' Dashboard, Puyo Puyo title screen raster etc.) if you have problems
with games when using -d3d try them without before reporting a bug. (although
please do report games broken with -d3d if you find them but make sure to
specify the problem is with -d3d)"
There was ALOT more things new in this version but it would make this website look like an eternity. Please download MAME from their Website.

05/25/2003 - SmoothMAME version 0.69 [Posted by DarkMazda]
SmoothMAME version 0.69 has been released! How's SmoothMAME different from the regular MAME? Well here is what the author says about SmoothMAME
"Smoothmame is a win32 mame derivative, and was created for users who desire smooth scrolls/displays in games that use a non-standard refresh rate of 50 Hz or higher. Very simply, when using this build, all games in mame will run at exactly 60 Hz, with a lot less flicker.
This is especially advantageous to those who play on fixed frequency displays, such as TV's and some types of arcade monitors. PC users will also notice a benefit as well if they have no interest or knowledge in setting up custom display modes for their video card."
Here is what is new in this version
1/ The following drivers have been modified in this unofficial build (based on the official mame 0.69 source) in order to achieve refresh rates of 60 Hz for one or more games within each driver:
argus.c, armedf.c, artmagic.c, baraduke.c, battlex.c bosco.c, brkthru.c, btime.c, capbowl.c, cave.c, cbuster.c, chaknpop.c, chinagat.c, cinemat.c, circus.c, cninja.c, cps2.c, darkseal.c, dec0.c, dec8.c, decocass.c, digdug.c, exidy.c, gaelco2.c, galaga.c, galaxian.c, gameplan.c, gaplus.c, gottlieb.c, grobda.c, hcastle.c, homedata.c, jrpacman.c, leprechn.c, m62.c, m72.c, madmotor.c, mappy.c, marvins.c, metlclsh.c, mhavoc.c, midtunit.c, midvunit.c, midwunit.c, midxunit.c, midyunit.c, mpatrol.c, mrdo.c, munchmo.c, namcos1.c, namcos2.c, namcos86.c, nitedrvr.c, nyny.c, overdriv.c, pacland.c, pacman.c, pengo.c, phozon.c, polepos.c, polyplay.c, psikyo.c, psychic5.c, rallyx.c, route16.c, scregg.c, seta.c, shisen.c, sidepckt.c, skykid.c, stadhero.c, starcrus.c, starfire.c, subs.c, supbtime.c, superpac.c, tagteam.c, toaplan1.c, toaplan2.c, toypop.c, travrusa.c, troangel.c, ttmahjng.c, tumblep.c, twincobr.c, vaportra.c, vigilant.c, wardner.c, xevious.c, yard.c
The following drivers whose original refresh rate is not 60 Hz, have not been changed since their gameplay would have been negatively impacted due to the substantial speed increase which would have ensued, not to mention that it would be unnecessary since they don't suffer from unsmooth scrolls anyhow.
(** 30/30 fps exceptions ** cischeat.c, gberet.c, ironhors.c, junofrst.c, mcr1.c, mcr2.c, mcr3.c, mcr68.c, shanghai.c, starwars.c, tutankhm.c )
(** 38/38 fps exceptions ** cinemat.c games were changed to 40 fps)
(** 40/40 fps exceptions ** asteroid.c, aztarak.c, bzone.c, cchasm.c, omegrace.c, sega.c)
(** 45/45 fps exceptions ** bzone.c, bwidow.c)
2/ Neogeo.c (src/drivers) and neogeo.c (src/machine) have been modified to allow console mode in the dipswitch menu for NeoGeo games.
I have made my best attempt to ensure that my changes did not break any drivers, although I can make no gurantees. After thorough testing, everything appears to be working as expected however.
Please download SmoothMAME from their Official Site.

05/28/2003 - KEGA Lazarus SE R4 release [Posted by DarkMazda]
KEGA(Sega Multisystem Emulator) version Lazarus SE r4 has been released! There are lots of new things in this release. Here is what is new
- * Fixed SMS Ace of Aces issue - this game now runs without the SMS BIOS.
- * Fixed GameGear Background Colour, which I must have broken with Kega Lazarus SE :p
- * Fixed GameGear Shining Force series. These games should now work correctly.
- * Fixed slight SMS/GG Timing problem with the last H-Interrupt.
- * Fixed issue when enabling and disabling SMS V-Interrupts rapidly.
- * Altered the SegaCD CDD emulation slightly. The WolfTeam games should once again work in Kega.
- * Kega will once again become idle when minimised.
- * Added VGM Logging. VGM is similar to the GYM format, but much nicer - and supports the 8-Bit Sega consoles as well as the Genesis/MegaDrive. Plug-ins to play these files with WinAmp are available. Currently VGM does not support the SegaCD PCM chip, so these sounds will not be logged - yet.
- * Added support for the Sega Game 1000, and Sega Computer 3000. Load ROMs for these machines as Master System ROMs, and Kega will detect them at runtime. Note that most (if not all) of these ROMS will *not* work with the SMS BIOS enabled, since they lack the signature that the BIOS uses to detect them. Also note that I do not support the SC3000 Keyboard, and currently have no plans to do so (it gets in the way of the GUI :S)
- * Added "BIOS Disable" option to the SMS/GG config screen, to make it easier to get around the problem mentioned above.
- * Added SMS/GG/SG1000/SC3000 Save States. Loading of MEKA states is not yet possible, this may be added at a later date.
Looks like there are lots of improvements in this release! Please download Kega from their Official Site
