06/03/2000 - Many Updates at SMB3C!@ [Posted by DarkMazda]

Challange Games has done MANY MANY Updates! Here are some you should see.

  • 17:09 As you may have noticed, the Smb3C CBs have been inaccessable since the site update that we have undergone. The Smb3C ones are now back online and updated to look like the rest of the site. To improve loading time, it has been split into seperate sections for each challenge. All dead links (from the site-hacking) have been removed, and there are now a total of about 93 nsms of people completing smb3c challenges alone. Let's increase that number!
  • 01:46 Didn't I just say I had a final release yesterday? Well, if you check the readme I said maybe. I jumped the gun and had not tested it enough, and that left a lot of errors. Today I have spent many hours testing and playing, and it is as error-free as it will ever be. There are maybe 3 or 4 graphical glitches, and I can't do anything about them.
  • 12:10 I notice that we are having an increasing amount of users from countries like Japan, Spain, and others, and so to support that group of users I have added a button the displays at the bottom of every page of our site, lets you use the InterTran software to to any of 27 languages other than English. This includes Russian, Japanese, Spanish, German, French, Welsh, and many more.
I must say Challange Games has grown ALOT and I think they are doing a GREAT JOB!! Good job X-4000 and many other staffs from Challange Games :) Please visit them Here.

06/03/2000 - Hu-Go Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Hu-Go! website has been updated with some news!

"2 June '00 : Just a quick word to talk about the new poll you can find on the main page. It features 4 questions concerning the price of Hu-Go! (I'm just curious, I have my idea about this :), utility of sources, banners on my site (to know if I could earn a bit of money even if I trust in open source and 100% free stuff) and release frequency.
I've also updated the technical stuff about the disassembled cd system card, I've found a new undocumented function today :)
Finally, I've no yet worked on Hu-Go! since the last version but Huc is going well and is getting nearer of the official 1.1 release with great new features."
yay! Please visit them Here.

06/03/2000 - Pretendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo website has been updated with some news also! Here is the post :)

"Well, I thought it'd be nice to start off June with an update... so here's one. Pretendo is now progressing very nicely. The next version for Windows has a lot of changes over the last, and we think everyone will be (more) pleased. A bunch of sound issues have been fixed, and there's now preliminary DPCM support. We may remove it though if we can't seem to iron out all the bugs by release time. Someone has been kind enough to write a waveOut Audio plugin so now Pretendo can run on a system with or without DirectX. Still on the issue of sound, I wrote the DSound plugin from scratch quite a while ago.. it now buffers sound and output is much much better. Still could use some work though. Moving along, there's lots of ASM all over the place so things should be running a bit faster. PrOxY has made some GUI improvements and fixed many many small bugs... hopefully this release will be a bit more stable than last. Other than that, you'll have to wait for the next release, and the next silly "whatsnew.txt" fo see what's in store. Hmm.... what else... oh yes, I've got a BeOS version of Pretendo up and running! Here is a screenshot.... If you look close enough you can catch a glimpse of some source code... The BeOS version is a result of about a month's worth of work (on and off). A good portion of the code came verbatim out of the Windows source tree, however I still had a fair amount of work to do. I had to de-plugin everything... sorry BeOS people, there won't be plugins.... I had to modify a bunch of System related code, scratch up a (temporary) mapper interface, graphics engine (shout outs to nyef for the help), and a bunch of other boring stuff. The BeOS version runs pretty smoothly, and isn't too slow either, considering the rendering is completely in C for now. Standard Bitmap-based rendering yields a nice framerate, however it's sync'ed to 60 fps anyhow. I still need to iron out a good bunch of threading bugs, and write an input driver, and then I'll release an alpha or something. Currently, iNES mappers 0,1,2,3,4, and 7 are supported. Other than that, there's not much else... no sound, no options, and bunch of other nice goodies are missing, some things need re-writes, and there's no PPC version yet until I finish my 6502 core which will most likely be sometime this month... I think that about sums this one up, if I forgot anything, oh well, there's the rest of June to cover for that. Whew, long update...."
Please visit Pretendo today =)

06/03/2000 - Apollo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Apollo website has been updated with some progress

  • A dynarec engine should be put in soon. Nothing out of the ordinary for this.
  • We've just had the memory module rewritten, and greatly simplified. A read from N64 memory takes 5 instructions and requires no look up table. Because of the memory simplification, we disabled controllers for now.
Our general priorities:
  • Exception Processing (Including TLB exceptions)
  • Dynarec
  • Support for 24 and 32 bit color modes
  • Audio (Interrupt faking at least)
  • RSP/RDP
Please visit Apollo today.

06/03/2000 - Mimic Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Mimic website has been updated with some news and some new screenshots!!

"I still can't get over the fact that Rygar is running (although it is no where near being playable). The fact is, I thought the crashing was due to the bankswitching. My newfound trust in the bankswitching code allows the emulation of other more-complex Z80 romsets.
Upon realising this, I immediately tried 1942 and BANG! there it was, running first go...

The other two pics above are: Mr Do! and Pacman-on-galaxian-hardware, both are playable with game altering bugs (possibly in the Z80 core).
I also updated the HWC guide with some tidbits to start off with. You may also note that I added a poll. Now, don't get excited. This is just so I can gauge public opinion. I may or may not take any advice from it. But it would be nice to know what everyone is expectting.
Also, to all the people asking for the Mimic source and for Mimic to become "Open Source"... FORGET IT. It aint gonna happen, no way, no how. So stop asking me."
Check out the screenshots and more info at the Mimic today.

06/04/2000 - AdriPSX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

AdriPSX website has been updated with some sad news :(

"Well... this will be tha last update to AdriPSX page for at least one month, as today my younger brother (who has been already punished, and later murdered by myself) formatted my HardDisk, destroying all my AdriPSX sourcecodes as well as most of my PSX related technical documentation.
A great luck for me, that I have a copy of "not so updated" source code at my officeエs PC, the one I use for "genetic experiments" with code. With that scratches I made up a last release that is quite more updated than the last one, although it doesnエt include my latest works on it (such as new GUI, better compatibility, some works on DynaRec and some major fixes on GTE). Well.. this last release, have ADPCM and CDDA Sound support and is something faster than the previous release.
I try to look at this as a fresh start... Iエll code AdriPSX from zero now, basing myself on the previous version scratches... now itエs time to code AdriPSX Pro... or something :P
    Wish me good luck, dudes!"
I wish you some good luck! Please visit AdriPSX and show some support.

06/04/2000 - Raine is back?!?!? [Posted by DarkMazda]

I just went by Raine's Website and the design changed. Here is the post I saw

"The site is not 100% content complete yet, but hopefully everything will be back soon and then maybe some new content, although no new releases. The html is hand written, making use of cascading style sheets (CSS). It's only been tested on Internet Explorer 5.0, so be prepared for small formatting problems on the other browsers."
. Does this mean Raine is coming back!? Please visit them Raine here.

06/04/2000 - CHASMS version 0.30 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

CHASMS version 0.30 has been released! This is a Windows SMS Emulator. Here is what is new

  • - CHASMS is now DX3/NT4 compatible, thanks to Aegis.
  • - More Load ROM dialog changes:
    • * Now can see and change disk drives.
    • * Listings now sorted by type in addition to alphabetically; directories go on top, ROMs go next, drives go last.
    • * Pressing keys A through Z will now allow you to 'jump' to ROMS beginning with that letter
    • * Added cute little poorly-drawn icons to the file browser.
  • - CHASMS now uses the Z80 emulation core from MAME.
  • - Fixed a bug that caused no emulation video to show up on a 15bpp (5:5:5 instead of 5:6:5) display even though the GUI would show up.
  • - Now supports ROMs with a 64 byte header at the end of the ROM. Peculiar.
  • - CHASMS.CFG will now always be saved in the directory that CHASMS starts up in, regardless if you change directories during execution.
  • - Added 'rompath' option to CHASMS.CFG; CHASMS will now remember what directory you were last in and put you there next time you start up.
  • - Rewrote video system; video memory is now converted from planar to linear on the fly whenever a ROM changes a byte in VRAM. Greatly simplified and optimized rasterizing routines.
  • - Drastically optimized the Pattern view dialog.
  • - Added the SMS BIOS! Both the USA version and Japanese version are included. Thanks to Zoop for finally releasing them.
  • - Fixed a bug where the very first tile would sometimes be corrupted.
  • - Generalized source cleanup. I'd like to prepare for an eventual source-code release.
  • - Began an internal ROM checksum database. This is a small database, only ROMs which need specific settings to run, are known bad dumps, or do not currently work are in the database.
  • - Preliminary FM emulation (FM chip is emulated, but I haven't written actual sound output code for it yet)
    - Fixed a scrolling bug that was causing the status bar of Gauntlet to be 'all weird'.
  • - CHASMS now remembers window positions.
  • - Video system: CHASMS should automatically detect necessary settings and find an appropriate mode automatically.
  • - Added Pro Action Replay code support, as well as a Cheat Finder system.
  • - Modified PSGPLAY to handle playing PSGs from other directories.
  • - SMS compatiblity is now something like 97%, and probably close to 99% if you don't count games that just need weird peripheral emulation. (lightun, 3d glasses, paddle, sportspad). GG emulation is ~95%.
Please download CHASMS from our SMS Emu Section.

"Sorry about not updating for a while. I upgraded my main machine (to a PIII 933) and in the process I had to switch motherboards. Unfortunately, this led to my reinstalling the OS and I've been lazy about putting Front Page back on. I've been slowly tracing into the Action Replay ROM. It is now doing both some SCU DMA operations and some SCU DSP operations. The DSP is a whole new processor to emulate, but luckily it doesn't have a lot of functionality. "

06/07/2000 - Sega System C2 M.A.M.E. Driver Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Sega System C2 MAME DRiver Has been updated with some news

    "08/06/00 01:41
Its been another day of mainly planning, not much coding.. Thats probably a good thing anyhow :P I now have a fair idea of how I'm going to do the sprites.. Some ideas on cleaning up the way my colours work, and I think I found the problem in my 'window' routine so it might be safe to enable it again. Speed is not a priority here (at the moment) *fingers crossed there isn't any protection stopping the sprites from being drawn in Thunder Force. As for the other games atm.. Bloxeed is presumably using colours from one of the other banks of palettes (if this is indeed how it works, which it does appear) as not much gets displayed at the moment. Columns sets up some colours but they seem to be wrong (will look into) Columns 2 only sets 4 colours (used for the game title) PotoPoto draws the same bear thing in what look to be correct colours.. The other things I've not actually looked at again yet :P"

06/07/2000 - Katharsis releases Raine 0.28h [Posted by DarkMazda]

Katharsis from GeoShock has released Raine 0.28h!! Here is what is new

  • Compiled with Allegro 3.9.27 WIP with additions by Antiriad. All speed problems Raine 0.28g had should be fixed with this.
  • Compiled with SEAL 1.07 for better compatibility with PCI soundcards.
  • Feveron EEPROM issues fixed. Insert Coin and the test mode are working now.
  • Puzzle Bobble 1 (B-System version) added.
  • Macross 2 added. Very preliminary, playable, but with loads of graphical glitches.
  • All unreleased sets are removed, will help you to complete your romset by showing you only missing stuff that you really can find out there (don't bug neither me nor Antiriad about roms).
  • Added the MAME names for some romsets (e.g. DFEVERON for Dangun Feveron).
  • The Cave games (Dangun Feveron, Uo Poko & Esprade) will run much better with a 16-bit screen mode. For that you will need to change "bpp = 8" to "bpp = 16" in the raine.cfg file. Don't try to run any other games in a 16-bit screen mode as it won't work.
  • If you need support for this release don't bug Antiriad. Drop into #Raine, EFNet and try to ask there (no rombegging).
  • This one release doesn't mean that Raine is alive again. Its future is still very uncertain and maybe you will never hear from it again, Maybe you will.
Please download Raine from our Multi Arcade Emu Section.

06/08/2000 - Samor's Emu Review adds new review! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Samor's Emu Reviews has added a new review today! He added a review cojmparison of 3 PSX Emulators, which are VGS, Bleem, PSEmu Pro! Here is a clip of the post

"So called 'next-gen emulation' is very popular. N64 and PSX emulators are downloaded a lot. While the PSX is getting an old machine now, the emulation of it is still considered 'next-gen'. PSX emulation also is a commercial opportunity, because unlike N64, which uses carts (roms) it's CD-based. The three best (and best known) emulators are PSEmu Pro, bleem! and Connectix Virtual GameStation (short: CVGS or VGS). PSEmu Pro is well known because of it's quality, the fact that it's not commercial and also because it was stopped when a leaked beta version spread out. In the meantime, bleem! became well known because it was commercial and over-hyped. At the moment many people aren't satisfied with it's current quality (how well it emulates). VGS, also a commercial emulator, is known because it was released for MAC. A lawsuit prevented Connectix from releasing it for Windows earlier. Two other emulators I want to mention are AdriPSX and PCSX, two relatively young PSX emulators which can't compete with the other three yet but they look very promising. While AdriPSX runs a few games, PCSX hasn't been released yet and runs only demo's so far. However, keep an eye on them!"
They have screenshots and everything! Please check it out Here. Thanks goes to Samor himself for the E-mail.

06/09/2000 - Mimic Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]
Mimic website has been updated with some news

"Added alternative code to draw VRAM on-the-fly. This means that I am only using about 4K per layer instead of 64K !!!
What does that mean? It means Pinball Action now works, the sprite enables are a bit wrong in places but that doesn't affect the gameplay
The down side is that the new code is strictly only 8x8 tiles so I will implement a concept of VDP (Video Display Processor) to allow this code to be turned on in the HWC. This also brings me one step closer to trying to write a SMS VDP!!! I am looking forward to that!!!
Anyway, expect a release in the next day or two with more efficient memory handling and Pinball Action!!!!
PS:Anybody want to give me some pointers on Sound Blaster programming???"
Please visit Mimic's website today.

06/09/2000 - NESten Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Zophar has updated ZD with some NESten news! Here is the post

"Lots of buzz has been going around many major emulation sites on the net about new features in the next version of NESten, which will be released very soon. One of these new features was reported to be "bypassing the mappers" and "emulating CRC", or something similar. Unfortunately, wherever the news originated, someone threw a few incorrect words here or there around.

The new feature is as follows: NESten will no longer read the iNES 16 byte header at the top of every .NES ROM out there. Instead, it will use the database from NEStoy, a NES utility (available at our NES utilities page) that checks all the NES ROMs in a directory, sorts them and lists their names. It basically will check the ROM's CRC, and use that information to determine information such as mapper, mirroring and save RAM flagging.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you have corrupt ROMs, at least you'll know it now. :) Also, if your header is incorrect it won't matter - NESten will bypass it. This feature can be disabled, however - and will be in the new version of NESten"
Please visit NESten website today for more info! Thanks goes to ZD for some info there.

Andy's Amiga Rarities website has been updated with 2 new games! Here are the 2 new games

  • Nathan Never is another game based on comics by Sergio Bonelli same as timerunners, diaboliks, tex willey and dylan dogs etc but this one isn't by Simulmondo The game is in english and comes on three disks. The graphics don't look bad, but according to the message on the screen, the disk swapping routine is notoriously bad for crashing. I haven't had much luck on winuae, tell me if you get it working and how.
  • Armageddon Man is another classic originating from the c64, that was a sort of god game before god games existed. In the game you are the armageddon man who basically has the fate of the world in his hands, controling of all the worlds nuclear arsenals. This was a breakthrough strategy game at the time and was quite interesting to play.

"Been Doing som Comparisons between the Original and Bootleg set of ThunderForce to try and get an understanding of how the protection works in this case. 06/11/2000 - Hu-Go version 1.25 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Hu-Go versoin 1.25 has been released! Here is what is new

"It's quite a minor one for dos users. It features mp3 playing and synchronisation for linux. Else one can now choose to enable synchronisation by default in the ini file, and I've updated a bit debugging info for working with the new version of Huc.
BTW, If I worked so few for hu-go! is that because I was finishing the release of HuC. Since yesterday, it can be found on utopia site. It features lots of interesting stuff even if some bugs can still be there (nothing bad, fortunately). I'd be glad to hear about people who are using it.
Else you can easily notice I've added some advertiser banner on my site. I hope I won't annoy anyone. I've searched hard some a compagny that would accept a little emulation site. I've put only 1 banner on some pages and they popup if you click on them (and thus help me earning a bit of money). My account is still pending so in fact, it's not yet of any use to click on them :)
About another interesting side, I should have a prototype of our project to link pc with pc engine in my hands on monday. It'll be up to me to make a software for it and to help fixing it if necessary. I hope we'll be able to publish schemes soon ("soon" is vague enough to let us time :) "

" Metroid C version .56 has been released. This is a bug-fix version from .55. The now-infamous icebeam bug has hopefully been fixed once and for all! There are apparently two slightly diferent versions of the Metroid rom out there, with only one byte different! In the version that I had been using, the byte at offset 126395 is $00; but in the other version that X-4000 and others appeared to be using, that byte is $EB. The new patch now works in both versions. Hopefull this fixes everything. Also, the patch is now in ips.exe form. It is also no longer zipped. (Zipping and unzipping a 14 Kb file is more trouble than it is worth.)"
Please visit Challange Games to get it :)

06/12/2000 - Sega C2 Driver Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Haze's Sega C2 DRiver for MAME website has been updated 3 times in a row today! Here are the posts for today

  • 11/06/00 19:44 - Sprites Coming on nicely, some positional probs at the moment tho.. once they're working the 'bootleg' set of ThunderForce AC should be playable (although glitchy atm) ..
  • 11/06/00 17:03 - Been Doing som Comparisons between the Original and Bootleg set of ThunderForce to try and get an understanding of how the protection works in this case. It looks as tho with the Bootleg its just been a case of NOPing some checks, as most of the changes appear to be this. I'll check what addresses these checks were at etc, as although the protection chip does differ between games its likely to be similar..
  • 11/06/00 01:37 - Not the Most Productive of days.. 'Window' Layer seems to work correctly now.. See Tforce Screenshot

1964(N64 Emu) version 0.4.9 is released! Here is what is new

  • -- 2 binaries: 1964interpreter.exe and 1964dynarec.exe
  • 1964interpreter.exe = more compatibility but slower
  • 1964dynarec.exe = less compatibility but faster
  • Once I handle self-modifying code, compatibility should be the same in both cores. Fortunately, the interpreter still seems a good speed on my overclocked celery 300A.
-- What's new in 1964interpreter.exe:
  • - Quest64
  • - Waverace
  • - Bomberman Hero (game needs serious work)
  • - There's likely to be a few others.
-- What's new in 1964dynarec.exe:
  • - More speed ( what else? :) )
  • -- Much cleaner and more manageable code
  • -- The latest graphics plugin (1964ogl.dll v0.2.2) is included with this release so you're up-to-date.

06/12/2000 - Secret Codes on the MAME WIP Page.. [Posted by neohaze]

In the style of the recent Weird Code messages on the NeoRage Homepage, the Latest MAME WIP update had a little secret of its own, if you look by the 9th June update (regarding the Fixing of the Williams 34010 games which have been broken since 0.36final) there is the following text

UINT8 new_shiftreg = (data >> 11) & 1;

which is a piece of code, I believe from the 34010 driver, or at least similar ot some of the code in it. Strange suggestions have been flying around, some even saying maybe this means the protection & bankswitching on Mortal Kombat 2 have been figured out. Not wanting to get anyones hopes up over it because theres an equal or greater probability it isn't that, but still food for thought.

06/16/2000 - AdriPSX Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

AdriPSX website has been updated with some news

"I've been working for a while in the new release of AdriPSX. Of course it is still a little far from completion.
Several very innovative technologies have been used while coding this new release (register mirroring, MMX, full asm, PC timers, etc)... latest tests shows that new CPU works more than 6 times faster than previous one. Also GPU (software renderer) is being done in full asm. With all this, next release promises to be a big one.
Also, I must not forget to say that this time, AdriPSX will be done for DOS, LINUX and WINDOWS... simultaneously released if possible (this depends mostly on the coders we get to help us).
Well... that why, again, AdriPSX team begin the search for people (coders and artists) to help this time. For coders we are looking for people with PSX coding knowledge and/or ASM coding knowledge. Also, this time we need artists for the design of new GUI, logos and others."

06/16/2000 - SNES9X Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SNES9X website has been updated with some news

"I'm getting very close to requiring beta-testers for the new NetPlay feature - it basically will allow up to five people running five copies of Snes9x on different machines to play simultaneously over a TCP/IP lan, or direct modem connection, or Internet connection or, in fact any connection that Windows supports TCP/IP over - although whether a game will be actually playable over the Internet will be down to local ping times...

I've been using Bomberman 5 as my main test ROM - it allows five simultaneous players and its very sensitive to Snes9x NetPlay sessions getting out of sync: it spins a random number generator each frame and uses it to build random screen layouts; one dropped frame and the Snes9x NetPlay sessions are looking at different screen layouts!

I'm beginning to wish I'd never started adding NetPlay - its been a nightmare. Part of the problem is me not having access to a network for 99% of the time while developing the code and the remainder is due to the implementation I've chosen...

I've tried to be clever - most implementations of network game-play just send a joypad update message to another session and then block, waiting for an update message from the other session. This has three problems: it slows down all sessions to the speed of the slowest machine, it only allows two players and it makes no attempt to hide network delays, probably making Internet game-play impossible.

My implementation is different, though not original. One Snes9x session acts as a server and sends out heartbeat and joypad information messages to Snes9x clients. A separate thread in the client sessions queues up heartbeat messages and then the emulation thread uses these to act as a speed regulator, skipping the rendering frames when its falling behind or sleeping when its caught up. Once each frame the client sessions send joypad state information back to the server. The major advantage here is that the server doesn't have to wait until all clients have received a heartbeat message, emulated a frame then reported back their current joypad states.

If you're interested in becoming a beta-tester for the network game-play, post a message on the Snes9x message board (http://www.snes9x.com/forum.asp) - I'll note down names and e-mail addresses and contact people when I'm ready. Please mention how you intended to try out the feature, e.g. direct modem connection to another machine, local lan, etc. so I can choose equal numbers of each"

06/17/2000 - Mimic Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Mimic website has been updated with some news! Here is the post that was on the website :)

"Seeing as the site is now a month old. I thought I would vamp it up a little.
Added a status line at the bottom of the screen, outputting all the nice info that I normally output into a log but #ifdef out of the releases. This shows things like FPS and where the HWC interpretting is at (useful to telling where you are hanging). I am considerring making this in different languages because I notice so many of the hits here are from all over the world.
Attempted to add sprites to the SMS VDP. This didn't quite work out. I may have to rethink the way I am doing sprites all together.
For the first time in ages, I tried running all the half-done HWCs I have here at bring them up-to-date. Some HWCs are now strangely broken. Its like they are using to much memory but they are now using less as I wasn't freeing the graphics ROMs...hmmmm...
Also, If you are having problems with Pinball Action not loading try editting the UNGET.BAT file in BIN. Comment out the DEL line by adding a REM to the start of the line. This may get PA working, but it WILL leave files in the TEMP directory that you should delete manually. "
This sounds pretty good to me! Please visit Mimic today :)
