07/05/2001 - New Kawaks Emulator [Posted by brains5]

Sup everybody, Brains here with a new emulator update. There is a new arcade emulator out. It is the Kawaks and it just came out July 4th, 2001. We will have it here soon but we need a little time. But, you better believe we will have it out to you, our adoring fans. Confusious once said (or so I think): Patience is a virtue. If you can't wait get it at www.zophar.net. While you are waiting check out some of these nice features:

Added option to display only romsets that are available in the load game dialog box.

Fixed Alien vs. Predator (Euro 940520) driver (sound bugs)

Fixed CPS1 sprite issues (Punisher bus wheels, Andor disappearing when he juumps, etc)

Fixed YM2152 (CPS1 music) tempo, but that causes new bugs: some sound codes mysteriously vanish now. That means sometimes, no music will play, or some sfx won't be played.

Much improved Z80/68000 synchronisation, which allows the following :

Fixed QSound tempo. Faster music, music synced to intro in VSav, etc etc

Overclocked CPS2 games to 12.8MHz (instead of theorical 11.8MHz)

Now lagging not only palette but entire VRAM. Fixes some layer/palette errors.

Various CPS1 fixes

Added a setting in the INI to control sound emulation frequency (44100 default)

New option in the INI to control the sound playback.

Now compiled with Turbo68K Version 0.5 (The Cpu Core Formerly Known As Genital68K)

Redid the Kawaks splash screen code. Should display things correctly for vertical games and it looks better in fullscreen.

New Alternate scanlines blitter.

New image enhancement blitters : 2xSai, Super2xSai, Eagle.

Changed the way the video blitters are handled (many internal changes to allow the future blitters).

Added an extra set of resolutions in the INI to differenciate fullscreen resolution for normal blitter which needs a lower res from enhanced blitters (which need a twice bigger resolution)

07/05/2001 - Visual Boy Advance [Posted by brains5]

Here is a Game Boy Advance emulator for all you Game Boy Advance fans. This is the newest version called the Visual Boy Advance (as you would guess). This one is trying to be more compatible or more like the Game Boy Advance but like always it has it's flaws such as the fact that you can't save games, some of the graphics are off, it is not 100% accurate towards the Game Boy Advance, etc. But there is always an upside. It has pretty authentic Game Boy Advanced sounds, 100% ARM and THUMB emulation (don't ask me what that means), and emulated BIOS functions (that I know). We will need sometime to put it in the emulator archives but we will have it. If you just can't wait for it go to www.zophar.net. In the Game Boy Advance section.

07/05/2001 - XCPC version [Posted by DarkMazda]

XCPC version 04072001 has been released! here is what is new

Please visit their website for download :) yes sorry but we need some time to put it in our archives :)

07/05/2001 - FCEUltra 0.60 [Posted by DarkMazda]

FCE Ultra(A NES emulator) version 0.60 has been released to the public's eye.. it looks like there are a bunch of new stuff in this :)

  • · Various speed optimizations.
  • · Sound is no longer messed up when a JAM/KIL opcode is emulated.
  • · Fixed an overflow bug that occured when $4014 was written to during certain(rare) conditions.
  • · Fixed a few save state bugs.
  • · Fixed a MMC1 CHR bank switching bug.
  • · Added emulation of the MMC5's WRAM write-enable/disable registers.
  • · Fixed a sound frame IRQ emulation bug. "Qix" works now.
  • · Added UNIF support. Some of the board emulation is still a bit buggy, though. Look at the documentation for a list of supported boards.
  • · Updated the "Palette Notes" section of the documentation. Also fixed a few other problems with the documentation.
  • · Added support for loading files in the PKZIP and gzip compressed file formats via zlib.
  • · Added the ability to configure the first scanline and the last scanline to draw to the screen. Enabling PAL emulation no longer will cause all 239 scanlines to be displayed, though an option to override these settings for when PAL emulation is enabled may be in the next version.

07/05/2001 - A Game Boy Advance Emulator Helper [Posted by brains5]

Here is a Game Boy Advance emulator debugger. So if you decide to download the debugger here is the website and once again it is www.zophar.net in the GBA Util section.. It will help your emulator run better, let you see how it is running, and more. Here are some of the features.

-Uses the BIOS image (there is a stub included that has only IRQ support) for all SWI calls.

-Console which displays the current status of the VM and has a prompt similar to the DOS prompt (more features and commands to come)

-CPU status viewer which allows inspection of the current CPU register contents

-Fully featured disassembler with multiple easy to use breakpoints (just click on the margin of the address where you want to trap), and the ability to either follow the PC or disassemble in either thumb or ARM as the user wishes.

-Hyperlinks in the disassembler, clicking on an address will take you to that address

-Scripted disassembley exporter, which comes with 3 templates for normal and multiboot images, and the BIOS

-I/O register viewer, with descriptions and access modes for each register, and a user selectable naming scheme

-Memory Viewer, with a seperate color code for mirrors of memory banks

-Palette Viewer, with import and export palette options

-A binary image info dialog, which displays the header and checks it for accuracy

-Screenshot capture to clipboard or a file

-Many CPU flow controls: Run, single cycle step, single frame step, n cycle step, n frame step, and reset.

-Correctly handles the quirky blending system (where only the first 2 blend layers are used)

-Correctly handles memory access widths

-Completly implements memory wait states

-User defined key bindings from the tools menu

-Import and export of binary data into memory via the memory viewer

-Saving sprite images to a file via the sprite viewer

-Saving selected layers to a file via the screen viewer

-Transfer to hardware tool, with a user defined transfer script

-Debug logging to the console, with user choosen events to log (configured in the settings panel)

-A header patching tool built into the program (you must supply a source binary file with the header to copy from however)

-A screen viewer, which allows the user to alter the display CR and rerender, to get a better idea of what is happening or see what has gone wrong.

-A C/C++ syntax highlighting source code viewer (in the future, this will be used for source level debugging)

-A sprite viewer which displays all of the attributes of a sprite

-Movie capture mode, which allows a pixel-perfect sequence of frames to be captured, at a much higher quality than a wideboy could provide.

-A complete VRAM viewer and examiner, allowing display of any part of VRAM as either a text or rot/scale map, tiles, sprite tiles, or as a frame buffer

-Support for all DMA channels (0..3)

-Support for all timers (0..3)

-Interrupt support (V-Blank, H-Blank, Y-trigger, DMA completion, timer overflow)

-Loading ROM images from 256 bytes to 32 MBytes in size

-Loading multiboot images from 256 bytes to 64 KBytes in size

-Loading and flattening .ELF files as a ROM (in the future, this will allow source level debugging)

-4-kbit EEPROM on cartrdige

-64-kbyte JEDEC Flash ROM on cartridge (incomplete)

-64-kbyte SRAM on cartridge

-Loading a BIOS image up to 16 KBytes in size

-Partial help file

-SDK documentation

-Complete thumb and ARM opcode emulation (the ARM core has not been completly perfected yet)

-All video modes supported (0..5)

-All blend effects supported in all modes and situations (fade towards white and black, alpha blending)

-All windows supported (including sprite windows)

-All sprite types and effects supported (including mosaic and blending)

07/08/2001 - Visual Boy Advance for Windows 2000 Errors [Posted by brains5]

If anybody has Windows 2000 has a OS and has had a problem with the Visual Boy Advance there is another update for it. You could get it at www.zophar.net and yes he are still having problems trying to put the emus in our archives.

07/08/2001 - New Kawaks Update [Posted by brains5]

Here is a new Kawaks update that plugs up a few holes the original Kawaks had. It also makes it a little more convenient for you with the feature that Alt and A controls the Auto frame skip. If you want or need it get it at www.zophar.net. Here are more features and flaws they covered up:

1.08 was a lot slower than previous releases due to the new VRAM lag code.

Optimised 2xSai, Super2xSai, SuperEagle blitters.

Added a scanlined 2xSai blitter (much faster than 2xSai, slower than scanlines)

2xSai, SuperEable and Super2xSai should work on S3/S4 cards, and some other exotic ones, now (I'd like feedback on that...)

Added a DisableJoystick option, since joystick management is a performance hit.

Fixed "Show if available" crash

Fixes in the menu code (better "ticks" management)

Support for a default generic key setting :

Alt+A toggles Autoframeskip. Also shows a message on screen, now.

07/14/2001 - New Co-Webmaster [Posted by uzplayer]

Since a number of emulation news web sites are going down these days, I thought of starting up a new emulation news site. One day while talking to DarkMazda over IM, he asked me if I would like to come on as co-webmaster here. I thought about it, and decided that maybe it's time I do. So here I am posting away at DarkMazda's domain. Feel free to e-mail me by clicking here to submit emulation news, as well as any suggestions you might have.

07/14/2001 - DarkMazda's Domain [Posted by DarkMazda]

Hello people, this is DarkMazda. Yes I know you guys were wondering what's happened to my site. To tell you the truth, I haven't had that much motivation to work on this site anymore. No help, lamers asking me stupid questions and so forth. Nothing really exciting happening in the emulation site as well. As I was browsing the internet today, uzplayer showed me a link to Emu-LMAO and I gave it a look. It was funny to see that the Petition for returning of 'zophar, darkmazda and uzplayer's show', which was Zophar's Underworld 3. That surely was a funny episode. That would be great if it comes back up again, just for a good laugh. Also, I read this on Emu-LMAO

"In rather sad sk3n3 news, it appears as though that site known for it's "Chairman and President of Sega Passes Away" theme the last few months is alive.

I wish Darkmazda the best of luck in avoiding being lmao'ed.

They have a clean record currently, which means that I wasn't doing a proper job my first 4 weeks :( "

And When I saw that, it just gave me this weird feeling that I have to start up DMD again :) I Dunno why. I asked uzplayer to join DMD and work on DMD with me. I think uzplayer is a really deticated and hard working person and I think that he would definately improve DMD in a way DMD has never gone to. To give you the best, fastest and the most informative news on the internet. uzplayer and I will be planning on the DarkMazda's Domain Project, which will be improvements, changes to DMD that will change DMD in a great way. Thanks for Emu-LMAO for putting the post up and so forth. You guys gave me motivation to bring DarkMazda's Domain back!

All in all: DarkMazda's Domain is NOT dead and WILL NOT be dead until I say so :) There might not be any updates for a little bit but we are definately working on DarkMazda's Domain to come up and become even better!

Thanks you Emu-LMAO and uzplayer for all of your support :)

DarkMazda

07/15/2001 - Kawaks Ver. 1.12 Released [Posted by uzplayer]

Kawaks Version 1.12 has been released. This is a CPS-1 and CPS-2 emulator for Windows. Here's what's new:

1.12:
- Sound REALLY fixed. I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused by 1.11

1.11
- That bad, naughty, evil, and overall not very nice sound issue should be fixed now :)) (Jesus, why did GetCurrentPosition have to report bytes instead of samples ?)
- Modified autoframeskip code to adapt to new timing system. Should be better too, now.
- Added a system to autodetect for each frame wether sprite masking is needed or not. Since it is not, most of the time, this speeds up things nicely in many games :)
- Fixed Street Fighter Zero - CPS Changer (Japan 951020) backgrounds (broken in 1.10)
- Macros for Player 2, Player 3 and Player 4. Have a look at updated Defaultkeys.ini
- New blitter: Zoom 2x software. In other words, 200% without blur effect. If you like "correct ratio" and not blur, I'd suggest you give a try to this blitter + stretch + eventually fullscreen. Keep in mind that this blitter is however significantly slower than Normal, Alternate scanlines or even regular scanlines.
- Fixed XMen Versus Street Fighters hanging when beginning fight against Apocalypse
- Faster loading for Capcom Sports Club
- Correct the CRCs for Capcom Sports Club XORs (didn't cause bugs, just reported XORs to be bad in audit)
- New function to redraw the current frame without the on screen messages. Handy if you want to make a screenshot.
- Added a few background colors in the menu
- Added Zoom window 100%/200%/300% in the menu
- Made the Reset key redefinable, since everyone seems to hate F10 :)
- The usual batch of comestic changes :)

07/15/2001 - Pete's Windows PSX ASPI CDR Ver. 1.6 [Posted by uzplayer]

Pete's Windows PSX ASPI CDR Version 1.6 has been released. This is a PSEmu Pro standard CD-Rom plugin for Playstation emulators. Here's what's new:

- "Try again on reading error" option. Now you can tell the cdr plugin to try the sector reading up to 10 times again. Very helpfull with scratched CDs (like my Tomb Raider 2 one ;)
- "Use PPF file" option. Some psx games need special patches to work right. Or you want to use special trainers/cheats for your game. In the past you had to create an ISO of that game, apply the patch, and burn the game again. Now you can simply select a PPF file in the plugin config, and the patch will be done automatically within the cdr plugin while playing the game... no need to make patched copies anymore :) I've made the patching engine very fast, I think, so you shouldn't see any performance hits (of course it will not _improve_ the performance as well ;) Btw, every request for PPF files will be ignored... The plugin supports PPF1 and PPF2 files, but it will not check if the PPF file is 'right' for the game you are playing. So take care (or better: take ePSXeCutor/PSSwitch/new AdriGUI to create different game configs). Big thanx for that idea to JNS... you were right... it is possible :)

You can download it by clicking here.

07/16/2001 - Lewpy's 3dfx/Glide Renderer version 1.34! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Lewpy's 3dfx/Glide Renderer version 1.34 has been released! Here is what is new

  • - Save State Picture Support - I've added full support for Save State pictures. You can see them, and it saves them too :)
  • - Tweaked Off-Screen Drawing Settings - I've tweaked the detection of recursive texturing when OSD is set to EXTRA. It should have less false detections (slowdowns if set to EXTRA, massive pauses if set to EXTRA+FBR), and hopefully it doesn't miss what is trying to detect!
  • - OnScreen Display Enhancement - If the OnScreen display is set to OFF, you get a 2 second message appear on-screen whenever you change the Save State slot or change the controller type. Unfortunately, there was a yet another bug in the last release, which meant after a while these messages would appear and then stay on screen. Whoops. REALLY fixed now :) .... I hope :)
  • - Improved Copy Info Output - Includes detection of Windows XP, and DirectX 8.1. Also fixed the bug that meant the output was cropped if ePSXe CDRom was set to "First Cdrom".
  • - Tidier Glide shutdown - I now clear both the front and rear Glide display buffers before I close down the Glide window, which helps keep the screen tidy if you are running dual monitors, like I do :) The 3dfx drivers are very poor at being used as a secondary display, and don't re-initialise the desktop after a Glide session :(
  • - Miscellaneous Fixes - Not too many this release. Don't expect any compatibility improvements with games that were having trouble with the last release (i.e. Xenogears, etc.) :(
Please download the new Lewpy's GPU Glide Plugin from their Official Website

MESS' WIP page has been updated with updates from the first half of July! Here they are

  • Saturday 14th July, 2001 - Krzysztof Strzecha checked in preliminary code for a Texas Instruments TI-86 driver. Krzysztof also added snapshot loading (VTI 2.0 save state files), sound (speaker connected to link port), a totally rewritten video engine so grayscale works now, NVRAM support, link port emulation (variables, memory backups and screen dumps receiving, variables and memory backups sending), fixed reset, and PCR emulation to the TI-85 driver. TI-85 and TI-86 ROM information was also added/corrected to the MESSROMS utility.
  • Friday 13th July, 2001 - Frank Palazzolo made an initial check-in for the Mattel Intellivision, and Intellivision Keyboard Component drivers, however they are still in a TESTDRIVER state. PeT changed the SC61860 CPU core making H as in internal register.
  • Thursday 12th July, 2001 - Ben Bruscella cleaned up the device handling to use a struct array rather than hard coded names, and moved the MESS image loading of a later point in the execution of the code.
  • Wednesday 11th July, 2001 - Ben Bruscella made a fix to the MESS logging routines although more code cleanups need to be done. PeT added DX64, T2500HX, and C128 (Italian) sets to the MESSROMS utility. Lawrence Gold fixed some ANSI/ISO warnings to the OpenGL target, added the ability to sort the gamelist for xmame, updated the xmame documentation to match MAME 0.37b16, and applied QNX Photon2 udpates courtesy of Travis Coady.
  • Tuesday 10th July, 2001 - PeT added some CRC's, identified a bad weak dump, and corrected some bad dumps as good for the Atari 5200 CRC database. Nathan Woods fixed the VZ200 driver by reverting back to Juergen's old video code.
  • Saturday 7th July, 2001 - James Forshaw fixed the DIV1 instruction Q bit generation for the SH2 CPU core.
  • Thursday 5th July, 2001 - PeT added rasterline rendering, fixed screen flipping, fixed reset, and added audio/timer connection to the Lynx driver.

Driving controller not supported yet. Sean Young removed redundant TMS9928A wrappers from the Coleco driver and applied some code cleanups as well.
  • Tuesday 3rd July, 2001 - Stefano Priore did a massive update to the messnew.txt file listing all the changes made since the last release.
  • Monday 2nd July, 2001 - PeT added rotation information to the Atari Lynx CRC database file, and modified the Lynx driver to use the new rotation information found in the CRC file. PeT also changed lynx1 to mono and made some blitter improvements to the Lynx driver.

07/21/2001 - SNES9X version 1.38! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SNES9X version 1.38 has been released!! Here is what is new

  • Added support for Star Ocean and Street Fighter 2 Alpha decompressed graphics packs from dejap. Used a binary chop search rather than a linear search to locate correct decompressed graphics more quickly - should help emulation speed during later stages of the game.
  • Included OpenGL support into the Linux port and speeded up the Windows OpenGL implementation slightly. The real speed up would occur if I could figure out how/if 16-bit textures are supported in OpenGL because at the moment the 16-bit software rendered SNES image must be converted to 24-bit before being uploaded as a texture...
  • Included the latest ZSNES DSP-1 code. Now Pilotwings, SD Racer and Suzuka 8 Hours are playable. Aim For The Ace, Super Air Diver 1 & 2 and Syutoko Battle 94 are also playable, but with bugs. Thanks to zsKnight, _demo_, et al for all their hard work.
  • Another Daffy Duck: Marvin Missions screen flicker problem worked around - writing to the IRQ enable register shouldn't clear any pending IRQs, but Sieken 3 seems to require this or else the game hangs. Special-cased Daffy Duck for now.
  • An NMI emulation bug was triggering a Panic Bomberman World game bug, crashing it. Basically, if a game enables NMIs after the normal trigger point, the NMI should not trigger if the game has already read the NMI clear register.
  • Panic Bomberman World requires SPC700 memory to be initialised to zero on reset otherwise the game hangs when a tune finishes and another one should start.
  • Added mouse pointer auto-hide to the Windows port. Much better than the turn the mouse pointer into a black dot method I was using before. - Included the latest ZSNES Super FX code. Not sure if it fixes actually fixes any games.
  • Added an offset hack for Strike Gunner to get the scrolling ground layer to line up correctly - another offset-per-tile bug hacked around for now.
  • Arrr! Left in some debugging code in the last release that prevented all games that need the slower SPC700 timing from working. Removed it.
  • Hmm. The broken cut-scenes in Deep Space 9 seem to indicate that I haven't got the emulated clock speed of the 65c816 CPU correct yet. And not by a little bit - a 9% too slow error. Hacked special timing for the game for now.
  • Added triple-buffering to Windows port - enabling double-buffering actually enables triple-buffering if you have enough free video RAM, defaulting to double-buffering if you don't.
  • Fixed another crash bug in the interpolated mode 7 code - if no scaling was being used (either up or down) and screen repeat was enabled and the screen was flipped horizontally, the routine would crash Snes9x. Was causing Snes9x to crash during rock monster boss stage of Castlevania 4.
  • Oops. Got the initialisation of the default SNES screen width and height round the wrong way - could cause a X Windows System error message on the UNIX port after loading a ZSNES freeze file.
  • Included the unofficial Windows port emulation fixes for several games including Kentouou World championship and TKO Super Championship.
  • Included ??? improved Anti Res. sound sample decoding routine and updated the C version to match.
  • Included Anti Res. improved sample decompression code he sent me ages ago, but for some reason I didn't include. Sorry. This version seems good enough to leave enabled all the time.
This is just the windows port that has been released! hopefully the other ones will come through soon!

Download it at: Snes9x

07/25/2001 - zsknight leaves zsnes :( [Posted by DarkMazda]

ZSNES's website has been updated with a message by zsknight saying he will be leaving the emulation scene and zsnes :(
Here is the post

"I'm sorry to say this, but this marks my permanent leave from the ZSNES project, anything related to this, and emulation overall. The reason why is that my dad just passed away today (he died in his sleep, which is strange since he was perfectly healthy yesterday night), so I'm going to have to spend more of my energy devoted to helping my family. My dad is also the main person who provides the finances to the family (since my mom doesn't work), plus I still have about 2 more years to go before I graduate from university, so my immediate future doesn't look that great because with my dad gone, that would mean that I need to put up more responsibility towards taking care of the family instead of studying. But I just hope that everything will go well. Thanks to all you supporters for everything. Sorry for the lack of a proper goodbye though, so I'll probably update once more after I get out of this shock in another day. "
I am soo sorry to hear about this. I hope everything will go nicely for him and his family :(

07/30/2001 - Meka version 0.58! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Meka version 0.58 has been released to the public! Here is what is new, which is pretty big!

    "
    - Added PSG sound logging to WAV files, accessible from the Sound menu.
    - Rewrote messaging system, added localization support.
Moved all messages to an external file, MEKA.MSG. You can now change
95% of the texts used in Meka, and translate it to the language of your
choice. I am however NOT YET sure about how accents will work, since it
    depends on the font used.
This feature required a pass on all existing code and so took plenty
of time to do (10+ hours), I might have screwed a few messages during
the change, so be sure to send me an e-mail if you notice anything
    unusual.
    - Implemented a VDP quirk found in Master System 2 but not Master System 1
or Game Gear, discovered by Charles Mac Donald (thanks Charles!). This
one fixes Cosmic Spacehead *BUT* might screws up few other games. I did
a bit of testing but couldn't do them all again, so please report if you
notice anything unusual with another game.
    - Improved hardware sprite collision accuracy, fixed a bug in some
cases where it was previously framerate dependant, and rewrote the
    whole code in assembly.
    - Changed initializations messages and some other messages.
    - Fixed an incorrect numbers of TV lines in PAL/SECAM TV emulation (due
to a typo - thanks goes to cgfm2 for pointing me this stupid error!),
allowing removal of a few custom MEKA.NAM parameters (Daffy Duck in
    Hollywood..).
    - Fixed the annoying bug that caused crashes on startup under DOS when
    sound was enabled.
    - Fixed a minor bug in Codemaster mapper emulation, that affected the
checksum check of 'Drop Zone' (although the game worked).
    - Fixed crash when using a patch defined in MEKA.PAT that write outside
    of any existing data.
    - Added (very) quick and (very) dirty frame-per-frame advance by pressing
ALT-F12. In fact, it will unpause the game then pause it back next frame.
    - Updated Colecovision compatibility list and added some product IDs,
    thanks to Tincho DJ.
The current state with Colecovision games is: a mess :(
Someone will lots of Colecovision knowledge would be very helpful
to help sorting out all bad dumps, testing games and redumping others."

Please download it at: Meka

07/31/2001 - ACE version 1.2b! [Posted by DarkMazda]

ACE(Another CPS Emulator) has been released today (after the release yesterday). Here is what is new in this version

    "Middle night update!
I realized I was emulating too much! I removed some unuseful features of the m68k core, and fps raised to the ceiling! Now you can play all CPS2 games (even those with rowscrolling, like sfa) at *full* *framerate* with sound!! We say "la notte porta consiglio" ("night brings you advice") in Italy...that's damn true! "
