08/01/2000 - YnT updated with some news about bahamut lagoon [Posted by Slime]

To quote from the page:
8/1/00 1:44AM No, I have not disappeared. I left the project alone because we do not have a decent translation of the game and we obviously aren't going to get anywhere without one. All of the translations we've had so far have been confusing and in contradiction with one another. I'm glad to have Byuu help us out with his asm skills. Today I fixed up my script programs to be compatible with this new font format. Of course, his changing the font to 8x12 makes all of the work I spent on my font programs and character pairing routines obsolete, but 8x12 will look better than 6x12. I also implemented a new 8x12 font into the rom which I've uploaded some screenshots of. I copied the terminal font from my computer, and I think it looks rather nice. Still, the only thing I want right now is a good translation! I don't want our hard work to go to waste!
so if anybody out there knows how to translate and is good at it this is a good game that needs to be translated so please help
Go to YnT's homepage for more info.

08/03/2000 - Brute Force Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Brute Force's website has been updated with couple more of movies of KIAME, here is the post

"The last video 'crash', shows a few of the problems with the beta, which are some of the reasons it isn't getting released yet (the pause at the end is the game crashing).

These videos should be higher fps than the last lot and are encoded with DIVX so you may need that codec.

I've been speaking to JPD and he says he is close to a releasable version of his DCS jukebox which is good news as that means that the sound code for the emu is just about done and it is essentially (I think if I was following what JPD said right) then just a case of rcp adding the core code of the jukebox to the emu..or something along those lines.

And lastly...could people stop mailing and icqing me with request's to be beta testers. It ain't my decision so please stop doing it."
Please visit Brute Force to see them

"Time for another official annoying delay update. I know - I hate waiting longer periods of time for something to happen only to recieve a message saying that nothing has. Well, here's the situation: I am now officially on vacation. This does not mean a vacation from working on my site - only a vacation from school and other pesky things - which means - I am going to make an effort to get alot of work done on this site by the end of the month. But I don't want to guarentee anything. My brother who lives in Denmark is currently visiting, and since I'm a gracious host (no, really) I'm not going to sit my ass infront of the computer while he has nothing to do. So until he otherwise occupied I will be occupied aswell. However - there is one thing I need before anything can begin. I'm looking for a good php book, preferrably in connection with MySQL as they are to be the main roots of my new site. If anyone has worked with either or both and has a book to recommend - then by all means - please mail me... Thank you. Just to recap - design done, content pending. "

CPS-2 Shock's WIP Page has been updated with some new progress! Here is the post

"I have retrieved more values from the CPS-2 hardware using the EEPROM emu and put it all in a spreadsheet for easy viewing (Microsoft Excel 97). A few numbers are also pointed out as they form a simple pattern which is very good news.... Suggestions anyone?

      CPS-2 non encrypted address values
      • I want to point out that some things are not possible with the way we are pulling info from the board, including;
      • Getting non encrypted info from any address space ( $0000, $0002, $0004, $0008, $0010 etc etc). Addresses we can use are limited.
      • Filling all the encrypted ROM content with #$00 and still get non encrypted values.
      • note. I have filled as much as I can (95%) but with no effect on non encrypted values retrieved.
Pretty cool. Please visit CPS2-Shock's website for more info.

08/10/2000 - Mimic Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Mimic's website has been updated with some progress on Mimic and SMS Roms

"I tried a few SMS ROMs, to see what was working and got this for Rygar !!!
At the moment, Mimic can only load 128Kb ROMs as that is all the memory it has left. This means that most games are out as most games (yes, that includes Sonic) are 256Kb. DAMN!
Parlor Games and Party Games run but the graphics are garbled, which is weird.
I am also going to attempt Gameboy emulation this weekend. I have had the code in there for ages and never tried it out.
Other things I want to have a go at putting in the next release include: 6809 emulation (this would be sweet), AY8110 emulation (sound for Bombjack, even sweeter), variant/cartridge support. "
Pretty shnifty! Please visit Mimic's website to see a screenshot. Looks nice :)

08/12/2000 - Vegas Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

vegas's website has been updated with some news

"OK. I meant to have made a new release by now, but I was a bit burnt out and wanted a few days away from my computer, then things got hectic at work. Ugh! Anyways, I just spent about 10 minutes today and two more Genesis games work! (Andre Agassi Tennis and the black screen bug in Batman & Robin)

By now, you've probably noticed something fishy on the web site.. Anyways, the name Vegas is a tradename of Sonic Foundry so I'm looking for a new name. Please e-mail me your suggestions. I'd like to release the next version of "the emulator" this weekend and I'll need to decide on a new name before then.

Oh, if you haven't noticed, I've removed the downloads until the next release. If you're desparate and can't wait for the next release, I'm sure there are some emulations sites around with the old version, though to keep the lawyers at bay, I would suggest any web site take down the emulator, though it should be ok to keep it around until the new version is released in several days."
    Please visit Vegas today :D

08/14/2000 - GENSX version 0.96 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

GENSX(Vegas) version 0.96 has been released! Here is the post

"Whew! Thanks for the e-mail and the great name suggestions. Over 50% of the e-mail was for GenX or Gen-X. Since this name is a bit common (and the name of a comic book) I decided to throw an "S' in the name and created "GENSX." I think it's a decent name since it's unique, sort of rhymes with Genesis, and has NSX in the name :) Another name I cam up with but decided against was "Gladiator." Other populator suggestions were Mars (Sega's 32X codename) or Neptune (Sega's never released Genesis and 32X in one machine.) Also a few people suggested "Exodus" which is the second book of the bible, Genesis being the first. I was toying with using that but eventually decided against it. I'd rather have a name that doesn't generate thousands of false search hits.

Anyways, what you've really been waiting for. Version 0.96 can now be downloaded!! I barely got half the features in I wanted for this release, but at my currentl pace it would be a long time before it was released and there has been too many cool changes to keep to myself."

    08/14/2000 - SNES9x Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SNES9X's Developer's Journal has been updated with some news

"Still working on the Windows port of Snes9x. Sound drivers this time.

At Kreed's recommendation I've included FMOD sound driver support, expecting to fix once and for all the sound problems a few people were having - delayed sound, skipping sound, etc. But, as usual there are problems. The code works fine on my notebook computer but blue-screens on my desktop machine. In fact its the FMOD init routine that causes the crash.

I've changed and hacked the code, made the init routine the first thing I call before any of my code and it still blue-screens. The example programs that came with the library work fine on the machine as does Snes9x, if I switch to using WAVE output rather than Direct Sound. Kreed's OpenGL Snes9x, which uses more or less the same sound code, also works fine. I guess it must be how Snes9x is compiled and/or linked that FMOD is objecting to. Why couldn't it be my notebook computer with the problem? 99% of all Snes9x development is done using it - I hardly ever get to use my desktop machine; my wife being hooked on The Sims doesn't help!

I've also been looking at the existing Snes9x sound code - oh dear, I wonder what I was thinking of when I wrote it. Direct Sound provides two positions in a sound buffer, the play position and the write position. For some reason I was using play position, or rather, just before the play position, as the position to write new sound data into the buffer; just after the write position should be the place to use to minimise sound latency.

Other news: NMI timing is back to how it was several versions ago - I changed it to fix three games, but it turned out that two of them were broken because of NMIs trigger more than once in the same frame, the third I've now just special-cased. This fixes several games that stopped working in the last few releases.

Oh, did I mention Snes9x now has OpenGL support? Two OpenGL modes actually, a bi-linear filter mode (same as current 3d/fx mode) and a rip-off of Kreed's bump-map mode, which in turn was ripped from NeHe's OpenGL tutorials.

Once I've tweaked the sound code a bit more and added a work-around to the draconian texture size limitation on 3d/fx cards for the OpenGL code, I'll make a new release."
Cool improving on sound might sound cool. Please visit Snes9x's website for more info.

Mimic's website has been updated with some news

"I squeezed a few more kilobytes of memory (and disabled sprites) to test 256K SMS ROMs. These pictures speak for themselves. I now only really need to do inputs(5 minute job) and sprites (code is there disabled) to have a playable emulation of SMS !!!
Of course, this emulation is still incomplete as I haven't figured out how to fit the on-cart RAM into the Mimic model. Shouldn't be too difficult, though.
I also updated the guide page a bit. Updates to the other pages of this site will be marked by the date on the menu entry to avoid cluttering up this page."

Woohoo after about 6 months of absence, SNEeSe team has released SNEeSe version 0.45!! Here is what is new

    • Sprite: Fixed sprite intermediate render buffer clearing - fixes garbage sprites in Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball, probably others
    • Source: Fixed source to compile with and now compiling with GCC 2.95.2, Allegro 3.9.32 WIP NOTE: All keymaps set in cfg files from previous versions are incompatible, and must be reset!
    • Stability: No longer using GCC asm labels, as GCC doesn't seem to be handling them correctly causing stability problems
    • Stability: Wasn't always setting es register up for string instructions, fixed
    • DMA: Now updating DMA transfer size after PPU->CPU DMA
    • Timing: Made several changes to improve IRQ function - fixes SF2
    • Turbo, New Ninja Warriors, probably others
    • Source: Ported the 65c816 CPU core to NASM Stability: Noticed I wasn't locking a var used in interrupt context, fixed
    • Allegro: Disabled Ctrl-Alt-End/Ctrl-Break exiting until I can figure out why they sometimes restart my computer under Win95
    • Timing: Changed the way CPU cycle counts are translated into SPC cycles - should allow for closer CPU<>SPC synchronization
Please download the source and the binary from our SNES Emu Section.

08/18/2000 - Pretendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo's website has been updated with some news on why they haven't been updated

"First and foremost, i would like to throw a very important point across. Pretendo is by no means dead. We have not cancelled the project at all. In a way, it's actually quite alive, so don't lose all hope. Now, you are probably wondering why i decided to leave the 'scene' back in June. Well, I'll try and sum it up, hopefully concisely. I do not feel the need to elaborate and/or explain myself. Take my opinions for what they are worth, and nothing more, I have no intention of influencing anyone. After working on Pretendo for all this time, PrOxY and I have grown a bit bored with it. Development has really slowed to a crawl, and has been that way for quite some time now. In addition, I am a little bit annoyed at how things are looking in the whole 'NES Emulator Scene', or whatever you want to call it. When I started working on Pretendo, there weren't very many NES emulators for Windows, which is one of the reasons I started the project. Now, it seems that everyday, a brand new NES emulator appears out of nowhere. Don't get me wrong, there have been plenty of fantastic 'new' NES emulators, but, still, a bunch of them appear to be worthless, and are released by some cluless 14 year old ripping code from various places. To be honest, it makes me sick. I have other qualms about the whole 'scene' thing, but I don't feel a need to share them since they are less important than the aforementioned. In any case, it was sometime after Pretendo 0.20 was released, that I realised I would have to stop working on pretendo to please the 'people', but rather, please myself instead. It's always a nice ambition to want to be at the top, but if there's no self-gain, I think it's a completely worthless ambition. Someday in the not too distant future, Pretendo will experience a rebirth. Pretendo will be re-written from scratch, based on our own NES-related research/dev/hackwork/reverse engineering/whathaveyou. Perhaps this means Pretendo is more alive than ever? I cannot say exactly when this will happen, or when I'll return to the 'scene' (if ever) but if all is well, all will end well. "
    Please visit Pretendo's website.

08/21/2000 - EmuSchool Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuSchool's website has been updated with some news

"I know it's been a long time, but we are still working on this project. I have been terribly disappointed that now that the emulator is running some mapper 0 games, the performance of the CPU is too slow to play them at a decent speed. Therefore, I've been working on a new CPU core and memory system. This new design I beleive will be much faster, although it is MUCH more complicated than the current scheme. Here are my current priorites: 1. Finish debugging the new CPU / Mem system and release the code. 2. Publish the as yet unfinished essay on how the original CPU works. 3. Port the existing PPU and peripherals to work with the new CPU. 4. Write an essay on how the new CPU works. Just wanted to let you all know what to expect. Also, I have been contacted about a port of EmuSchool to the Dreamcast. Expect an update to the Ports page with more details. "

Gleam, the First NES Emulator for the Dreamcast has been released to the public! This is only the demo version! But here is what you do

    • Burn it to cd, click here to read instructions how to convert the .bin to 1ST_READ.BIN (NOTE: this gleam binary has NOT been scrambled), or
    • You can convert the .bin to .srec and upload it via a serial cable link. As far as the roms go, one is built into the binary (sorry, I'm too lazy to implement a way to load any rom right now) -- it's a freely distributable ROM (afaik)...
Please visit Gleam!'s website to get it :D

08/23/2000 - Sintendo Build #34 release! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Sintendo(SNES Emu for the Dreamcast) version #34 has been released! Here is the post he made

"I'm sure most of you have noticed that this site hasn't been updated in four days. My life has been hectic for the last few days (with moving and my girlfrinds birthday to name a couple things). I make no specific apolgies, however. Unfortunately, this project is a free-time project; when there is no free time to be had, there is little that can be done. My computer has been unplugged for the last two days and I've been dying to get back to work but just haven't had the time. The deadline stands.

I didn't want to have to come back to you guys without anything to show you, so as soon as I got the chance, I got back to work getting the splash screen slideshow to work. In total it took me only about a half and hour and a single CD (I used the multi-session technique, it does in fact work).

So here you guys have it, Build #34. To burn it, you will need the zipped executable. The burn instructions are exactly the same as for Build #15, so scroll down the page if you don't know how to burn it. The executable is 6 megs because the pictures are part of it. I also zipped up the source code in Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 project format. The project is the Win32 build, which you shouldn't have any troubles getting to run off the bat. To compile it for the Dreamcast, you will need to create a new project and add all the required files to it. I also will provide the source in html format, so you can read the source without having to download anything.

I'm still working on the emulation part. More to come..."
Sounds interesting! Please visit Sintendo today :D

(Yes, pop in the emulator CD, take it out and pop in the ROM cd, load a rom, boom) .. It's cool :) .. So from now on I don't have to have the precompiled-into-the-source-code roms anymore.. Oh, ya, so all you folks out there can start burning rom cds to use with this emulator, you will need to make sure it burns in a MODE1/2352 track, or using the -xa1 option in cdrecord for you linux people. Thanks everyone for your support!"

08/28/2000 - EmuDX still here! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Mike Green sent EmuViews a message about EmuDX!! Its still alive!!

"Mike Green sent a note to the EmuDX mailing list yesterday with a few details that may be of interest to you. Among them are new and preliminary "Mr. Do" graphics submitted by Daemon. Also there has been some work done on save-states affecting more games, and Space Invaders is starting to show first signs of life! Most importantly though is that Mike found someone to co-author the main emulator (code-wise) so there will now be more than one person working on the EmuDX code simultaneously. This should speed up progress quite nicely. While there are no updates on the website yet, this information is official. I will follow-up with more news as they become available. "

08/30/2000 - C2 MAME Driver WIP Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

The Sega System C2 MAME Driver's website has been updated with some news!

    • 30/08/00 16:30 - Worked out the odd thing about the protection .. PotoPoto now works, its a neat puzzle game too :) Shots again from the C2emu
    • 29/08/00 20:17 - Completely off-topic, I added Winter Bobble (a clone of Snow Bros) which has been in Raine for a while to the Snow Bros Driver in Mame, it requires changes to both drivers/snowbros.c and vidhrdw/snowbros.c file which can be downloaded here, you'll also have to add a line to driver.c.
    • 28/08/00 17:31 - Patched Ichident-R (Puzzle & Action 2) to run in the C2Emulator, for some reason the STOP instruction appears to have a different effect in Mame / the C2 emulator (mame ignoring it and continuing with the code, the c2 emu using starscream halting emulation.. unless I missed something..) Hopefully the SpainDumps version of Puzzle & Action will be redumped soon and maybe that can be made to run as well :)
    • 28/08/00 15:07 - Found an additional Patch for Puyo Puyo which prevnts it from Locking Up (due to protection) when going into attract mode.
    • 28/08/00 05:59 - Another simple patch, this time seemingly making Zunzunkyou No Yabou at least partly playable (previously reset after you started the game) .. seems like a rather odd shoot 'em up to me .. but it plays :) Again Shots taken from the C2 Emu, not the Mame driver
Please visit them over at http://www.geocities.com/unemulated/c2driver/ to see some screenshots as well :D

08/30/2000 - SMS Power release! [Posted by DarkMazda]

SMS Power has released a rom and with a really cool update at the last section

"The USA version of Captain Silver was finally dumped and it's now available. The story behind it is that the USA version is a reduced version compared to the original. As a result, what was a quite hard game is now one you can finish with ease. Back in the days, the same happened with Super Mario Bros 2 which was not released outside of Japan. May I ask, why by the hell marketing had to do such things? Are they considering North Americans gamers as dumb? ^_^ I don't know but it is real weird to me! If you feel like discussing this topic, head of on the forum.

And now, the time has come. :) We are gonna release in a few days an heavily SEGA related game, however not made for a SEGA system. This is maybe of the rarest videogame ever made (didn't say released, hehe!), and my guess is that fans will love it. But, we do need several mirrors to handle the release. The game is about 150 megabyte zipped. Ahem. Please e-mail me quickly if you can handle a serious mirror for the it, and be prepared for an amazing mix.."
Welcome back Zoop, hope your feeling better :( Please visit SMS POwer to get Capitan Silver

Mimic's website has been updated with some news

"Fixed yet another bug in the Z80 core. This time the whole concept of HALT was wrong. This fixed SMS:Gauntlet. I also got the Gameboy VDP displaying something sensible. I wonder what else now works. I don't think many arcade games use HALT, but consoles seem to use it alot to sync with vblank and doing raster tricks."
