09/02/1999 - Sunset 1.5d released [Posted by _Bnu]

A new version of Sunset, a N64 emulator, has been released at http://www.moonlitcoalition.com. It's a rather old version by the former lead coder "Lews Therin Telamon", who seems to have used kind of a lot of names, hehe. Anyway, it can run a few games but of what I've seen it can't really run anything very good. If you want a N64 emulator that plays a lot of games correctly you'd probably want to stick to UltraHLE, hehe.

Anyway, it's available for download from the N64 Emulators page.

09/02/1999 - MesaDX 0.00 [Posted by _Bnu]

MesaDX is a new SMS/GG emulator, but it's quite a bit different from all the others out there. This one isn't mainly developed for playing games, but rather for developing and debugging them. It doesn't have any video or sound emulation yet, but still you should keep an eye out for this one, since it has the most advanced debugging features so far to ever be seen in any SMS/GG emulator.

You can download it from the SMS/GG Emulators page.

A release is expected soon, and EmuHQ has some nifty screenshots of the GUI.

After almost 2 years of no updates, Magic Engine, the fastest and probably most compatible but still one of the oldest Turbo Grafx 16 emulators has returned! It has now got it's own domain, http://www.magicengine.com, and I must say it's available in a whole load of languages :) So far only the Japanese and Spanish versions of the page are offline. Anyway, you probably want to know the specs for the new version, and here they are:

  • custom System Card - no more ROM needed to play CD-ROM games!
  • enhanced user interface - easier to use!
  • better emulation!

Sounds interesting, ne? :) Anyway, the emulator I would recommend for you if you want to play this game is MEKA.

Go visit SMS Power if you want the ROM.

  • Better ISO/CD support
  • Support for ISQ (Hu-Go! specific compressed ISO files) (only if code <280 Mb for now)

  • ISQ and ISO can now be chosen from the file selector
  • Saved game have slightly changed so you might encounter some rare problems with it
  • Can now choose which CD drive to use

  • More game pads should be supported
  • Screen better centered
  • Improved debugger

"Trying to release the smallest ROM ever made? Hmm.. today contestant is Guzzler for SG-1000. Eight kilobytes, 5.679 bytes zipped. Needless to say, I even took the time to upload it to the mirror. It is a classic style arcade game, released in 1983. I bet some of you weren't even born at this time! Anyway, I hope you will like it. It's one of the eight Tsukuda games. What a quick update. I think I need some sleep"

09/04/1999 - RealityBoy updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

RealityBoy website has been updated! HEre is what the post looked like from the site

"Eureka, it works! Last night I finally finished wiring my 256KBx16bit eprom up to a hacked version of Mario Tennis, and after programming the rom with an image of Space Squash, to my surprise, I was able to play the game on my VB (Yes)! First, I have to say this is not a very exiting game (sniff), the game plays a lot like Mario Tennis, only tennis is more fun. The 3D effects are good, but this game could have used another month of code, to add a lot more variety. Anyway, now Im all set to code up real games on the VB, so this weekend I hope to wear out my eprom programmer, and hopefully I can discover some new quirks of the VB. I will post plans for the reprogramable cartridge soon, Also I would like to work up a circuit board that could handle a 1024kBx16bit eprom/flash rom."

Please visit RealityBoy's Official Site.

09/07/1999 - HASH 1.0 b1 [Posted by _Bnu]

I thought I'd add this, since it seems to have been missed :) HASH is a new Gameboy emulator with CGB emulation capabilities. It's not on the level of DBOY or No$GMB though, hehe. It has 98% of the GPU core written, 80% of the "old" graphics engine is done, 40% of the new graphics engine is done, there's no sound yet and the CGB stuff is 85% emulated. Well, although there's no sound, the sprite priorities are a bit off and it's a bit slow it's nice to see a new addition to the Gameboy emulators available out there!

You can download it from our Gameboy emulators page.

Woohooo after 7 months! A New version of the UltraHLE is being developed by RealityMan, here is the post from the site

""Many of you have asked the question, Why restart the UltraHLE site after seven months away and why just as a support site? Well, as some of you speculated there was more to it. With Version 1.0.0 of UltraHLE we waited until we felt it was good enough to release before we annouced it to the world. As many of you may remember it created quite a stir and we were suprised by the ensuing 'feeding frenzy' of the rom beggers etc, hence the project was discontinued. There are now many more N64 emulators available now that run commercial software so it seems the right time to let you know that UltraHLE v1.1.0

09/08/1999 - Nemu Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Nemu64 has been updated!! This is what they posted

Hey guys,
Didn't feel like taking on any big projects tonight, so I did lots of little things. I fixed the wireframe mode so it works again (Yeah!) I fixed some problems we were having with fullscreen mode not showing up correctly. Found out my screen had been set too tall and fixed that so it all shows in the window now. Added about 6 combine modes to Mission Impossible so it looks a whole lot better. Same for micromachines, though I still haven't figured out why the racecourse is so funky psycho. I lost some text, and am going to have to figure that out tomorrow. Got some trees though :) Oh, and the last thing I did was to work some on my combine mode caching (speed) and fixed some modes in Waverace so now you don't get that big white block on the screen anymore. Sometime during the night something I modified fixed some of my texture bugs. Who knows. :) I'm hoping these bugfixes will extend to other roms, as many roms have overlapping needs/features. The compatability list keeps growing slowly. I can't wait till you guys can see this stuff. :) I tried running 0.5a the other day and found it too painful.

Sleep time now.

09/09/1999 - It's 9.9.99 here and guess what... [Posted by zentendo]

Dreamcast has been released tonight at midnight in St. Louis, MO (where I live). If any of you where at the big sha-bang at Slackers hope you had as good of a time as I did. I was the second person (my cousin was first, same story as for Star Wars E1) to recieve the US Dreamcast (this makes a Hong Kong model and a US model for me). Anyway, just to report on what happens today there are three things to my attention.

Dreamcast (US model released)

Final Fantasy 8 (US)

MTV Music awards (I won't be wasting my time *puke*)

My last word of advice is to not pass up the DC, go - buy - enjoy!

09/09/1999 - Challenge Games Releases... [Posted by zentendo]

A new Super Mario Brothers 3 Challenge has been released. You can also pick up Metroid Challenge.

Another cool Metroid bit-o-news many of you may or may not know about is that there will soon be a TC for a game called Shogo to remake it into Metroid, a macross TC is also planned. wicked.

09/09/1999 - New N64 Rom releases and GB mod encoder... [Posted by zentendo]

There was two new ROM releases that I missed earleir yesterday. The first, F1 Racing 2 PAL, was released by Quazar. The second, Tonic Trouble US, released by the one and only TC (The Corporation). As a last big of news, I recieved a bit of news from TS_Garp of TC and Obsidian that he has completed his Amiga MOD file to Gameboy Blackbox translator for all you GB programmers out there. Looks like Obsidian is going to take us out of the dark age of programming for these consoles.

Hi, it's me :) I'm in school now, updating from here since I don't have http access at home. I'll spare you from all the tips I've missed to post, though. I'll just post the ones from yesterday until wook sends out a new pack of them :)

The Register posted info regarding the GameBoy Advance processor design.

09/07/1999 - Two new 32x ROMs released [Posted by _Bnu]

I don't know if we've posted about any of these two, but I'll take the chance :) Anyway, Genesis Power has released two new ROMs, both sports games, NBA Jam TE and NFL Quarterback Club.

If you want the ROMs you can download them over at Genesis Power.

09/07/1999 - fMSX 2.1 [Posted by _Bnu]

I was roaming the 'net for stuff to update about and when I visited Kinox I noticed that Marat Fayzullin has released a new version of fMSX, and here's the new stuff for this release:

  • Rewritten V9938 graphical operations and initialization sequence
  • Improved real-time clock emulation.
  • Fixed some bugs in colors, speed and memory allocation
  • Reduced window size in Unix/X to speed up updates.
  • fMSX-Unix received tons of fixes and improvements

There is no shareware Windows version, only the registered version that you can order at the homepage. On the other hand, if you use a Unixoid OS you can go download the Unix version, which is freely available, from the fMSX homepage.

People from BaRDS (Brazilian ROM Dump Squad) have dumped Disney Mulan for Genesis! According to people in #rareroms, the ROM resets after the first level, but Genesis Power will try to patch it and release it soon! The ROM and some snapshots are available at BaRDS and Kinox.org

09/10/1999 - Snes9x Linux version 1.23 is released [Posted by DarkMazda]

Snes9x Linux version 1.23 is released! here is what is new

    • Corrected a SA-1 reset bug that reset the SA1 RAM bank pointer back to block
    • zero but didn't clear the RAM bank register. Was causing Kirby 3 to crash.
    • Fixed a wave clipping problem with interpolated sound that was causing noise
    • on sound output when certain sound samples were played.
    • Fixed a bug in the sync-sound code that could overrun the sound buffer by a
    • few bytes causing clicks on the sound output.
    • The sound sample repeat bug that has plagued Snes9x ever since is was called
    • Snes96 finally bit the dust - Snes9x continued to play sample loops
    • even if the game dynamically updated the sample not to loop. Fixes the
    • stutter in the Mortal Kombat series and improves the sound from several games
    • that download sound samples in real-time as they are played.
    • Rewrote the code the handled the SPC700's 64 byte shadow RAM area to fix a
    • possible sample corruption problem with ROMs that stored samples that
    • cross the 64 byte start area.
    • Added code to allow ROMs to change the sample being played the next time the
    • channel loops or is keyed on - not sure if it fixes anything but seems more
    • correct.
    • Added a zero-frequency fix to the stereo sound mixing code that I'd already
    • added to the mono code some time ago.
    • Changed the code to set the end-of-sample flag just before the last block is
    • played, rather than just after. Seems to help improve the sound on some
    • games.
    • Sound sample start code now doesn't reset the channel's envelope volume level to zero before starting the sample - helps reduce the clicks being heard when a channel envelope volume level hadn't reached zero before being keyed on
    • again.
    • Changed initialisation of sample-end-register to 0 rather than 255 - seems
    • more logical now I've thought about it. Not sure if it helps anything.

Please grab this from the Snes emu section.

    09/18/1999 - Snes9x Updates [Posted by DarkMazda]

Snes9x website has been updated, here is what they posted

"I wish I hasn't started the SA-1 instruction skipping code, its taking far longer than I thought, so much so I've given up, for now.

The problem was that instruction skipping code for the main SNES CPU and the sound CPU could generalise how the CPU could be woken up - any interrupt, timer update, write the CPU comms registers, etc. would wake up the CPU.

The SA-1 is different. It mainly waits for the main SNES CPU to tell it to do something, but can use any one of thousands of memory locations at its 'comms' port. I'm going to have to write code to wake it up only when the main SNES CPU writes to the comms port - the trick is to do this with as little overhead as possible otherwise all the speed gained from instruction skipping is lost testing when to wake the CPU back up again.

I'll come back to the SA-1 at a future date, in the mean time its back to Windows port. Jerremy has sent me some incomplete cheat dialog code and I've reading the DirectX3D documentation, so you can guess what might be coming up in the next Windows port release..."

Please visit their Official Site for more info.

    7. ThePI has been updated! Here is what is new

CPU: 90%. I haven't been working on the new dynarec for about one month, and I'm trying now to motivate myself about finishing it :-)

GPU: 70%. The remaining 30% shouldn't be a problem. It is just a matter of handling all drawing modes (transparency/shading/4-8-16 bpp) on all primitives. However, I still have at least one big bug somewhere in the GPU DMA handler:-( Some basic promitives (line, flat polygon) are still not handled.

MDEC: Nothing done, but handling this one will be a real fun (really!)...

CDROM: Just a skeleton has been written. Nothing 'real' is done. I'M LOOKING FOR ANY INFORMATION ABOUT CDROM I/Os. PLEASE! SIO (Pad, memcards): Only a very basic emulation that handle pad 0.

GTE: I already have a lot of informations, but, as I'm not a 3D matrix guru, emulating all commands may take a while...

      SPU: Almost nothing done...

VIDEO: Already nice. I still haven't figured out how to calculate the exact screen width/height, using the physical beam settings (GPU 0x06xxxxxx, 0x07xxxxxx).

      Please visit their Official Site.

I'm sorry to have missed my 2 week 'rendez-vous' but I had troubles with my ISP (I still have but I should be able to do a few things if you can read me =). This version is a minor release. It include few new feature and is still unstable with some new stuff. A new format (again ?) appears for multi-code CDs and MP3 audio emulation.

Please grab this from the TG16 emu section. My ISP isnt still working so that means im not updating from my house.. this is a pretty hard thing to do :( but I will try my best. so wish me good luck.

09/19/1999 - Zsnes .962 is released [Posted by DarkMazda]

Zsnes .962 is released here is what is new from .962 and .953

v0.962c - Exit text now only displays when text mode is 80x25
    - Used hardware DMA counter to determine which sound block to
write to rather than assuming it always starts at the first one
for the sound routines. This should hopefully fix all those
nasty sound static problems many people seems to have.
Many thanks to Crono for the code and for his help!
    - Removed Re-Init Every 30 Second option. Shouldn't be needed anymore
    - Added the ability to disable the Low Pass Filter
    - Implemented Diagonal Keys
    - Implemented some SA-1 speedups

    v0.960c - Modified header reader a bit
    - DSP/SPC700: Modified EndX register usage to fix some compatibility
    - DSP/SPC700: Fixed up timing registers

    - Fixed an adsr -> gain switching bug
    - Extended maximum number of cheat codes from 75 to 255
    - Altered .spc format again, this time to suit the ID666 format
    - Worked a bit on SDD-1 emulation. Don't think we can go
any further since we can't seem to figure out the compression
    algorithm used in that chip.
    - DSP/SPC700: Added low-pass filter by kode54. Thanks kode54 for
the code! This enhances bass in some games.
    - SA-1: Fixed memory map access problems with several stack
    instructions and d-page instructions

09/20/1999 - Huge EmuBits.. [Posted by DarkMazda]

Yay!! Phone lines are working fine now, im using my own computer, this is MUCH better because I had to use AOL On like a 14.4 connection. Anyways here we go, this EmuBits will contain all of the updates(BIG AND SMALL) we missed in the last couple of days. I think this will be the biggest EmuBits ever, usually, EmuBits are just small updates that u don't really need to post a news about it, but since I missed like 15 updates, I just thought that I should put all these in ONE BIG UPDATE :)

    1. Pete's OpenGL GPU version 1.22 was released, here is what is new
      • I've noticed that the texture window mode wasn't turned off in the RC Stuntcopter demo causing a strange display. Fixed!
      • Speedup in my texture cache management. Well, if you have a PII(or better) you won't notice the improvement, but on the otherhand it couldn't hurt ;)
      • A small bug caused transparent pixels in movies or menu screens in rare occasions. Fixed, so the menu of Aeronauts (demo) is fine now. The demo is still unplayable slow, of course...
      • If you are using a 16 bit texture quality mode (4-4-4-4 or 5-5-5-1), and your OGL driver supports packed pixel formats, you will see a small speedup in MDECs or uploaded screens (well, 1-3 FPS).
      • Improved tile offscreen drawing. Repairs some baddies I've seen in several demos.

Please grab that from the PSX Emu Section.

    2. Snes9x Linux version 1.25 is released! Here is what is new
      • Corrected unzip code not to loop forever if an encrypted zip file is loaded -an error is generated instead.
      • Changed relative SPC700 cycle length for Mortal Kombat 3 to fix sample
      • repeat problems - I wish I knew exactly how fast the SPC700 is clocked. Maybe I should write a test ROM and run it on a real SNES? 1.24
      • 3dfx speed hack back again, only disabled when Seiken 3 is loaded.
      • Some
