I am also adding some other things...
- The ability to map the addition buttons in CHEAT mode... (a+b, c+d, b+c+d, a+b+c+d) (NEOGEO mainly)
- Plus the ability to save your overclock settings per game...

12/01/1999 - 3DOpen has been updated! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like 3DOpen site has been updated! here is whats posted

I haven't updated the site in a while, as I've been busy with several things. In fact, I don't expect to make huge amounts of progress until after the end of the year. Why? A couple of reasons. First, I have two small children, and it's the Holiday season, and I want to spend time with them (and my wife). Second, I have two small children, and it's the Holiday season, and I'm going to be real busy with Holiday related things.

So what have I been doing? Well, so many people have written in asking to be have their particular platform supported, that I sat down re-wrote the CPU emulator in C. I wasn't going to do it, but since I'm not getting very far on the hardware emulation side, I decided to have a go.

This means that, ultimately, I will try to support any platform I can cross-compile to, and that someone wants to test. Oh, and I went out and bought a nice new iMac DV, so you can add the PPC platform to that list.

I mentioned I'm not getting very far. With some help, I've made some contacts with people that very well may be able to provide hardware technical information. As soon as it comes in, I'm back on it. For know, I'm in a temporary holding pattern, enjoying all things non-computer.

Happy Holidays!

12/02/1999 - EmuDX updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like EmuDX site has been updated with some news. Here is the post

EmuDX is progressing, albeit slowly and painfully, especially with my total lack of internet access at the right times.

Here's the games we *should* see supported in the next release: PacMan, Ms. PacMan, Galaxian, Pengo, and Phoenix.

There should also be an assortment of sound card options (for people with sblive in particular)

There's also other stuff that is still in progress. I'm looking into what other games can be included easily now that the program structure has changed totally,
giving us the ability to plug new games in, or at least better than before.

If things go well, such as the pengo/phoenix graphics, then I want to get the first big EmuDX release in, along with the screensaver and theme for Windows before Christmas, but all that really relies on the availability of the improved graphics & sound in time. If this is not the case, it won't be available until after the new year.

Please visit EmuDX for more info

12/02/1999 - EmuBits.. [Posted by DarkMazda]

EmuBits for today

  1. JoseQ has written up a rumour this week! This week's theme is on MAME, Sparcade and other stuffs :) Please visit EmuViews to view them

  2. There was a TRWinGL preview on Emulation64, here is the post

FiRES and Icepir8, the authors of TRWinGL, gave us the current beta version of their Nintendo64 emulator so we could do a preview of it. TRWinGL was originally based on the True Reality version for UNIX authored by Niki Waibel. So on to the facts....The last version of TRWinGL had bugs and errors that where so essential that they had to totally rewrite the entire core. They have now come a long way and graphics along with compatiblity is improving very well. Another thing to metion is a new and handy GUI. Check out a shot of the new GUI here. As you can see on all of the screenshots, TRWinGL has advanced pretty much since the last release. The beta version that i have tested is much more compatible with commercial games than the last official version released. It is also a bit faster.

Please read the preview at Emulation64 Thanks goes to Emulation64 for the news.

  3. It looks like there is a site that was trying to make a Portable system to play MVS Games. Its called "Neo Geo LT Project". Here is the post from theis tie

I recently purchased a Super Nova system from MAS. After examing how Nova works, I learned alot on the JAMMA standard. I used Super Nova to play MVS system, but I wasn't happy due to its size. After seeing how small the mini MVS board is, I decided to make a self contained MVS system, so I am able to carry inexpensive MVS games to my friends' houses.

Please visit the NeoGeo LT Project website.

  4. It looks like there is a new N64 emulator out there, on EmuForce, they had a post on it, here it is

Trust me, this emu is gonna be one of the best N64 emulator when it will be released to the public. The emulation is already pretty complete and the emu has sound (yes in commercial games too), a great compatibility (it runs at the moment about the same games that Nemu64 can run plus a few more) and a good speed on the most games. Some games are still a bit buggy and slow (Zelda64 is one of them) and that's why the authors are currently rewriting the main core of the emulator to get a BIG speed improvements (one of the authors told me that, according to the first tests, the new core could be as fast as the one in Corn, that super-fast N64 emulator).

There is no release date as of yet because the authors are VERY busy with other things at the moment and then the new core needs time to be finished. However I can assure you that this emulator is TRUE and is not a fake or anything (all I can say is that the authors are known in the "emulation scene" for other popular emulators other than this one). Below I posted some screenshots of the emulator running Zelda64 (I had to edit the screenshots to remove the name of the emulator, sorry the authors asked me to do so).
Looks good! Go visit EmuForce to check out some screenshots of the emulator in action!

Please visit EmuForce for more info.

12/03/1999 - Pretendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like Pretendo has updated also, here is the post

02 december 1999.

Coolness, another update! Well, hopefully everbody's bookmarks are up to date and stuff like that. First and foremost, I'd like to ask of anyone if they remember the old counter value. It seems that sometime today, it has been reset, probably due to a file being deleted by accident. If you have the counter value, please email it to me here. I will likely write a new counter within a couple of days, and I'll find a way to make sure it doesn't get f-ed up.
On a brighter note, we've finally got the CPU working properly, for the moment. We're now looking for ways to speed everything up, and we've been somewhat successful thus far, as the DX blitter is now in Assembly, allowing for a pretty decent speed increase. We have plans of re-doing the renderers in Assembly also, but that's probably not going to appear in the WIP version. We've finalized an input plugin format, so we'll try and whip up some documentations and make them available for download. Hopefully the WIP version will be ready in a 2 to 3 weeks time :). That's all for today.

12/03/1999 - Challange Games updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like Challange Games has been updated with some news, here is the post which x-4000 sent me

Well, a lot has been going on in the past three weeks at CG. Three great Hacks of the Week (Peach's Nightmare, Final Fantasy Epica, and Luigi and the New Quest) have been selected from the scores of hacks that have been submitted, rated, and posted on the Hacker's Forum.

And from these three... the much more prestigious Hack of the Month was selected! You'll have to go to the Hacker's Forum to see which one it was, but let me tell you, it was a very nicely done one!

Also, Metroid Challenge version .35 has come out, bringing many new levels and improved gfx to that classic game, and Challenge Boards, which are like online scoreboards for the hacks at Challenge games, have gone up for many of the hacks, including MetroidC and some of the more popular hacks on the Hacker's Forum.

But wait, there is more... Super Mario Bros. Challenge will have a big update in a few days, completing more of that very popular hack.

12/09/1999 - CapCom roms being shipped for HotRod users [Posted by DarkMazda]

I saw on EmuViews that the HanaHo HotRod Joystick is shipping Capcom roms to people that bought the joystick. Here is the post from EmuViews.

If you're the proud owner of a HanaHo Hot Rod, your Capcom ROMs CD should be on the way to you as you read this. It has come out of the oven, and it's currently being shipped to all owners and buyers. There's one mistake however, instead of including the game "U.N. Squadron", "Carrier Air Wing" is included. This was an error on documentation and cover art, but the CD itself will list 'Air Wing' and that's the game the User Interface will let you know. Also as a reminder, HanaHo is going on the 16th for Christmas Vacations, so if you want Santa to carry one of those gorgeous sticks or cabinets and put it under your tree, you better place your order soon.

If you bought a HotRod joystick, you should be getting your CD Soon :) Thanks goes to JoseQ from EmuViews for the news :)

We are still looking for some staff to help with updating the site, and for other tasks that require attention.

If your interested in affiliation, more details can be obtained by emailing me.

More Galaxian picture now online on the screenshots page, which are soon to be followed by new Ms. Pacman, and one of the other work in progress games.

Pacman and Ms. Pacman now have major speed increases over their PacDX and EmuDX beta counterparts. The way the video is drawn has been completely re-written, and it shows!

12/12/1999 - EmuDX updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like EmuDX has been updated! Here is the post

We've got more screenshots on-line for you, this time it's one of my personal all-time favourite games "Frogger". The game is now completely playable and is only awaiting the music for it to be "complete", or as complete as it will be for EmuDX 1.0!

Here's something for you to consider. The Frogger graphics took less that 5 hours to fit all into place, with all the scrolling, transparencies, etc. Several games on the Status page are in a similar position, whereby once the newly rendered graphics are ready to fit in, there will be a very tiny gap between then and your first glipse of those new graphics.

Still no release date planned, although a private alpha release was made yesterday, which will effect the date upon which EmuDX is released to the public.

Please visit EmuDX

12/13/1999 - Challange Games updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like Challange Games has been updated with some news, here is the post

Well, a lot has been going on in the past three weeks at CG. Three great Hacks of the Week (Peach's Nightmare, Final Fantasy Epica, and Luigi and the New Quest) have been selected from the scores of hacks that have been submitted, rated, and posted on the Hacker's Forum.

And from these three... the much more prestigious Hack of the Month was selected! Final Fantasy Epica snagged that award this month! Hacks of the week are done on every week where there are enough hacks submitted to have a decent contest, and there is always now going to be a hack of the month.

Also, Metroid Challenge version .35 has come out, bringing many new levels and improved gfx to that classic game, and Challenge Boards, which are like online scoreboards for the hacks at Challenge games, have gone up for many of the hacks, including MetroidC and even some of the more popular hacks on the Hacker's Forum!

Finally, Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 Challenges will each have big updates in the coming weeks, most likely soon after exams are completed for everyone at CG.

Please visit Challange Games which is hosted on DMD! :) Thanks goes to x-4000 for the email :)

12/14/1999 - Pretendo Updates! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Pretendo site has been updated with news! Here is the post

Okay. First on the list is our graphics engine. PrOxY has re-coded most of our scanline renderer in Assembly, so we've gotten quite a nice speedup. We're not where we want to be in terms of speed yet, but we're getting closer. Once we get a tilecache in there, we'll probably be in business. Next on the list, we have implemented preliminary Save/Load states. By preliminary, I mean preliminary, so we've got a bit more work to do in order to finish it up. We've finished up and documented our input plugin format. Follow a link below if you're interested. So, maybe you're a big fan, or you just like to read long news updates, and you're wondering "When the hell are they going to release something already?" Well, it has come to my attention, that this Saturday, will mark exactly 6 months since the last release! Quite a long time. What's holding us back, you ask? Well, our primary drawback as of now is that we're waiting for Neil Bradley (good friend of ours, and very nice guy) to fix up a couple of things in his 6502 core, so that it will deliver the best possible performance. No ETA on that one, but I'll keep everyone posted should I recieve any news. The next drawback is our graphics core. We want Pretendo to be as fast as possible, so we really need to take our time and squeeze every bit of speed out of it that we can. This should require a nice amount of Assembly, and probably a tilecache. To be honest, I have no idea when we will finish up the graphics core, but the sooner the better. Now that I've killed the vibes, here's something to cheer everyone up. We have decided, that in honour of this lovely 6 month drought, we will release the WIP version _this_ Saturday, no matter how bad it is! We're mainly doing this in order for everyone to get some idea of what we've been doing, as well as to allow anyone who wants to write a plugin to be able to actually test it. Keep note that you'll probably need a fast CPU......

Pretty big :) please get the documents at Pretendo

12/14/1999 - Emu+ version .36b11 "FIXED" version is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Emu+ Version .36b11 FIXED VERSION is released! Here is whats new

  • Fixed the remaining listsample, listsamdir, verifysamples, listinfo bugs (I think that I got em all) (Tomahawk, gorf, wow, invinco, etc, etc, etc)
  • Fixed the screen bugs (1/2, 1/3 screen syndrome). This apparently was due to the screen centering code from OPTImame. Works fine on my pc, but looks like other folks were having problems. (Could be my implementation of the code. I don't know some monitor/video card combos DID NOT LIKE IT.). The mame.cfg file has a nocenter param now. Use -nocenter from the command line to turn off centering or set it to nocenter = Yes in the mame.cfg file. Set nocenter = No to turn it back on for the folks that have no problems with the center code.
  • Added support for the MVS redumps of Burning Fight. (bnfight and bnfighth).
  • Don't forget to delete your cfg files. Weird things happen. I'm going to move the overclock and autofire settings out of here so it wont mess up the official version cfg files.
Please download it from our MAME Emu Section. Emu+ is a MAME Emulator basically with more nifty stuff :) Thanks goes to Danmanya for the e-mail :)

12/17/1999 - EmuUpdates.. [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like there are couple of Emulation Site updates! Here they are

  1. Magic Engine site has been updated with some news, here is the post

Sorry for the quick countdown change of yesterday - at the last minute.
We really didn't want to do that, but at this moment that was the only thing we could do.
Up to this moment we didn't know that we would have to report the release, we knew that we couldn't release the Mac version and for this we had prepared an announce, but we did expect to release the PC version yesterday. We worked non-stop during 24 hours to try to finish everything in time, sadely that was not enough as you found out.

We perfectly understand that you are dissappointed by this, but we are too, that's not easy to decide to report something at the last minute, which all that implies...
Sorry again about all that, but we thought that it was better to report the release of a few days and give you a fully working version, rather than releasing a version that we knew wouldn't have worked on all the machines.
You can flame us, but in such a bad situation for everyone, encouragements are more welcome than flames. ;)

Please visit MagicEngine for more info

  2. Calliope site has been updated with some news also! Here is the post

Well, Calliope's code is too complicated at the moment, so I'm gonna rewrite large chunks of it.
So no updates for a while. Maybe if everything goes well, I'll fix most of the bugs that I could never find in the last incarnation. :)

Please visit Calliope for more info :)

12/17/1999 - UltraHLE status update! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like RealityMan has updated his messageboard for UltraHLE :) Here is the post

I know many of you want regular news updates on the progress of UltraHLE, whats happening, when its going to be released etc. First, the reason why there are so few, ok NO, news updates is that I have changed my stance on the news. When I was updating I had so much negative feedback that I just got to the point where I decided that I would privatly develop HLE 1.1 and release as and when I was ready. As far as a release is concerned, I have heard the rumours of a Christmas release or a release on the 1st aniversary of HLE 1.0's release but I can tell you now that this will not happen. I am spending my development time up to the new year currently on Jagulator and will not be resuming development of HLE till mid January time. At that point I will review the project and look at the targets and whats left to be finalised. Hope that clears a couple of things up...

Please visit UltraHLE Message Boards

12/17/1999 - MagicEngine Apologieses.. [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like MagicEngine site has been updated with an apology and an explanation on why the MagicEngine was delayed! Here is the post

Thank you for reading,
David & Cedric Michel

12/18/1999 - MAME .36b12 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAME version .36b12 is released! Here is what is new

    New games supported:
    --------------------
    HAL21 [Phil Stroffolino]
    Pinbo [Scott Kelley]

    New clones supported:
    ---------------------
    Arch Rivals (revision 2)
    Finalizer (bootleg)
    Mad Gear (Japan)
    Paint Roller (= Crush Roller)
    Raiden (2 new sets)

These drivers have new or improved SOUND:
    -----------------------------------------
    - 8039 in Finalizer. [Nicola Salmoria]
    - Fixed hanging music in Raiden. [Bryan McPhail]
    - Fixed missing sounds in roishtar. [CAB]

    Other drivers changes:
    ----------------------
    - Bypassed the protection in Exerion. [Zsolt Vasvari]
    - The hangs in Tempest caused by the Pokey protection should now be fixed once
    and for all. [Juergen Buchmueller]
    - Fixed hangs in roishtar. [E. Watanabe, Takahiro Nogi]

    Changes to the main program:
    ----------------------------
    - [DOS] Artwork files can be stored in a .zip file. That way you can have eg.
both spacewr1.png and spacewr2.png in one file spacewar.zip.
    [Juergen Buchmueller]
    - Added the possibility to use a multiple keys or joysticks sequence to drive
a generic action. This can be handy with consoles or cabinets with a limited
number of buttons, to reuse all buttons with only one extra button, like a
shift key. For example the COIN1 action can be mapped to the "Player 1 Fire"
plus the "Extra Shift Button". It can also be used to map Q*Bert movements to
joystick diagonals (since the orginal used a joystick rotate 45 degrees).
    [Andrea Mazzoleni]
    - Added cpu overclocking control to the on screen display. [Juergen Buchmueller]

12/19/1999 - MAME Releases! [Posted by DarkMazda]

Here are some other .36b12 version of MAME is released

  1. PacMAME version .36b12 is released! They also have released Images, Flyers, Cabinets, Mazes and sounds to make your PacMAME life even BETER! :) Please download PacMAME's Images, Flyers, Cabinets, Mazes and Sounds at PacMAME Site

  2. Unofficial MAME32 version .36b12 is released! This is what P2L97 has posted about Unofficial MAME 32

"This is an unsupported, unofficial build of MAME32 based on the MAME DOS source and the MAME32 source with assorted modifications. It is not supported by the MAME team nor any other human being on this planet. Use at your own risk."

  3. MAMEJoy version .36b12 is released! Here is what is new
    • There is an additional menu for games with analog controls called "Analog Axis". On this menu, you can use the left and right keys to choose which analog joystick axis corresponds to which analog axis in the game. "default" still chooses the first analog stick. Thus, you can swap the X and Y axes with any controller
    • Added in an option to the analog controls menu to toggle auto-centering on and off, as was done in optimame
    • The mouse buttons can be toggled to be either distinct buttons or
    • to duplicate Joystick 1's buttons. This is an option in the Analog Axis
    • menu. That should make things easier for people who want the mouse to
    • work with their default assignments.
    • The mouse axes can be set from the Analog Axis menu to map to any
    • player and axis. This helps in two particular situations: It allows you
    • to rotate the mouse and swap the X and Y axes, and it lets people build
    • 2-players controls that physically connect to the mouse X and Y axes.
    • Allows you to save all of the analog settings, at least globally. They are then automatically reloaded on startup.
    • Debug output is created for all joysticks, in "joy.out".
    • If an invalid joystick name is entered, the user is asked for a valid
    • one, with a menu (like with sound).
    • Unsigned axes (such as throttles, commonly) are fixed in MAME.
    • Throttles register digitally, and can be used as buttons.
    • A held-down button will not mess up the joystick settings process.
    • Some more small Allegro fixes, such as in the axis name

Please download these from the MAME Emu Section

12/19/1999 - MagicEngine beta 2 released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

It looks like a 2nd Beta version of MagicEngine has been released! Here is what is new

BTW, about the slowdown some of you are encountering with the beta, this is not our fault, this is because we use DirectX to zoom the display, on some video cards this is very fast, faster than in DOS, but this is not always the case, and it can sometimes be very slow. We will try to find a way around that, but we can't promise anything. To give you an idea of the speed of MagicEngine, on a Pentium at 100MHz, most games run at about 40fps, some even at 60fps, and on a Pentium II at 400MHz everything runs at more than 240fps! Oh, and this version is really a Windows program, this is true that this is not really noticeable, but this is definitely not a DOS program!

Please download it from MagicEngine

12/20/1999 - MAME32ASM version .36b12 991218 is released! [Posted by DarkMazda]

MAME32ASM version 36b12 is released! Here is what is new

  • "Modifiable_palette" has not been implemented, so colors could be incorrect (official core has been changed ...)
